Proper wrist hinge in backswing.

I stumbled upon this video and to me it is a very good analysis of how the wrists should hinge in the backswing. It promotes keeping the right hand on top of the club to deliver a descending blow upon impact.

Any thoughts?

I like Danny Maude, seems to explain his concepts for you tube videos very well. Seems sincere and his information is decent and effective.

ALWAYS REMEMBER - you can’t get the proper wrist hinge if your grip is too tight.

Lighten it up. You want a 3-4 grip on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a death grip.

Good stuff if the clubs in your fingers. I’ve been lucky enough to teach this game for 16 years and have seen that when it comes to the grip, most of my lessons start with the handle in their palms.

I also think that it is vital to have index finger held as "trigger" on the club, versus resting against the middle finger.

amazing, that i recently started listening and practicing all i read...this little factum is so crucial to the golf swing... all the coil, turn, whatever..just doesn't work without proper wrist hinge.

It's giving up that control that takes some serious training..but it is the only way to pure golf..pure swinging

I have some difficulty with this. Specifically unhinging should accelerate the club in the direction intended. However the hands are at right angles to this. It seems to me if this unhinging is near impact the club will be wide open and impossible to close. To show this from address hinge straight up holding club at impact angle to unhinge the club comes vertically down not contributing to speed in the desired vector at all.

I took a lesson this weekend and we focused almost exclusively on the take away and wrist movement. It's his way of moving me into a rotary swing. The above video is very helpful reinforcement!

I'd never heard of this trigger finger thing until this post. Had to google it. It's interesting, and I'm surprised it was never mentioned in any of the lessons I've taken from multiple pros over the years.

You certainly don't want a death grip but I think a 6 or 7 on a scale of 10 is more correct. Pros have a lot stronger hands and their 3 or 4 would surprise you I think.

Hinging is easy. It's proper unhinging that's the real trick.

Very nice video. What I always have a hard time understanding and doing is from that hinge on the backswing how do you create more hinge on the way down like most people recommend. If you’ve already hinged on the backswing, how can you hinge more on the downswing to get more lag. I don’t get it.

I don’t think that perception is correct - that’s why so many players struggle trying to “hold the lag”. To me I think it’s more of an optical illusion looking at a 2D pic from the face on view. At impact the lead wrist is going to be ulnar deviated (opposite of hinge/c0ck), so in the downswing the wrist goes from hinged (radially deviated) to ulnar. The reason for the *angle* seen in lag think of not in 2 dimensions (x,y axis), by in 3 (z axis)...from a DTL view the club is parallel with the trail forearm between P5-6, so this shallowing (from bowed/flexed lead wrist, squatting/pivot, or some combination of the two) keeps that angle even as the wrist moves from radial to ulnar. Trying to keep the hinge in the downswing will keep the wrist in radial deviation which will lead to a flip impact position.

Yes I try to do the lead wrist bowing outward at impact like the reverse motorcycle move but you hear about the need for lag and all these things so I just wonder. I guess it all goes back to “swing your swing”.

It’s really confusing without an illustration or video to show, but what I’m saying is the lag you are seeing is from the wrist bowed coming down. That’s what’s making the *angle* ...the wrist is actually decocking/unhinging at this point, but because it’s bowed, it’s an optical illusion of sorts. From face on view, it looks like an L in 2 dimensions but it’s not from the hinge. The L is the angle of the arm and the club which is now shallowed. So to answer your original question, the wrist isn’t hinging *more* in the downswing...so just get it set going back, and it will naturally unhinge in the downswing, but the shallowing of the club/wrist flexion is what makes it look like the wrist hinge is making the angle.

POV instructional videos should be mandatory by now for golf instructors. In addition to the Danny Maude video that was posted, I recently saw a Crossfield video where he demonstrated the proper grip from a POV camera angle. It's SO MUCH EASIER to comprehend.

Just a thought and I could be completely off base, but when I was playing around with this it seems like it keeps the clubface in a closed position. Wouldn’t this promote a hook?

Genuine question - are you sure the clubface is in a closed position or is it square to path rather than being open?

I like this video on proper wrist set from the AMG guys. It's easy to understand and was eye-opening for me on just how little movement there actually is in the wrists to get to the proper set position.
