Iron head covers! Yay or Nay?

GL3

Recommended Posts

I use neoprene iron headcovers and I love them. IMO there isn't anything worse than seeing a great set of irons for sale with dings all over them from chatter.

Covers come with woods, and putters so what are the thoughts about why they don't come with irons?

Chatter doesn't bother me. Just the way I grew up. Putters didn't come with covers back when I started playing golf.

Wood vs metal, metal wins so woods got covers for protection. Some folks used a sock. Literally an old sock was used.

Nowadays, woods are made of metal but have fancy paint jobs. Protecting that is an issue. And fancy headcovers are a cottage industry. No more old socks.

Welcome to the site.

FYI, there are thousands of threads and posts about this. Really. I think some might be under the same exact title. Just block a few weeks out of your schedule and check them out.

As for the "why," there are lots of reasons, including the fact that irons can rust, repeatedly smash into the ground and objects other than grass (never mind the bag chatter), etc. -- and the other clubs you mention might be painted and/or easily scraped/dinged, and otherwise have a better chance of staying pristine.

Oh yeah I bet. I'm currently in full post mode!

Good point with rusting irons inside the covers. IMO covers just make sense especially if you know you're going to sell them at some point.

Thanks for the welcoming!

PLEASE don't put covers on your irons :stop: I think dings in the blades give them character, aaaand iron covers just make you look like a 30 handicapper I feel like. (no offense haha)

I'm scratch and have been known to use headcovers on my irons. I usually just put them on when the clubs are not in use to avoid unnecessary damage, but I have been know to keep them on during a round.

For me, they not only protect my irons, they offer noise dampening. The sound of irons clanging around on the back of a golf cart or banging together when I walk can be an annoyance to me sometimes.

If someone sees my iron covers, assumes I'm a high handicapper and wants to make me a target in a money game, that's fine by me.

Covers work, period.

Bag chatter, IMO, looks like s**t.

Forged or not, irons clanking around in the bag are annoying, covers solve that as well.

Like others mentioned, when I sell a set of irons, I get far more than those which are all 'beat up' with bad chatter, mine look pretty much new except for the parts that are supposed to have wear marks, the sole and face of the irons.

Each to their own, but I've used covers (all my irons are forged and have been since late 1980's) on all my forged irons and won't be stopping to do so anytime soon.

The biggest nay possible! Negative sauce. A little chatter gives your forged irons character. I don't know what cast irons are.

Cast irons can get banged up, depending on type of metal cast from. My X12 Pros got banged up when I experimented with a cast club for a short time.

Whats strange is that I have been playing forged irons for as long as I can remember and none of them had a lot of bag chatter on them and if they did, it was very minimal. I played with a set of Nike blades for 2 years and they still looked brand new the day I sold them. Maybe I'm just more careful with my clubs or maybe because I don't carry. If I walk, I have my push cart. But I've been to my local shop that sells used clubs and I've always wonder how forged irons get banged up as bad as some of them were. The only irons that I've had problems with were Mizunos and thats because their forged irons are super soft. I've had my P770s for about half a year now and not one chatter mark yet.

I don't like having covers on my irons. Tried it when I bought a new set and they didn't last a round, but to each their own.

Do you match the irons covers to your bag or your grips?

LOL, what a silly question. Black neoprene matches everything.

I cant live with out them. Walking, clanking, chattering, denting, just bug the S out of me. So I primarily do it for that, but then when you pull the iron out and it looks as good as when you spent 1K plus, you know they are spot on great. I don't really care if they match the bag per say, just go neutral as stated above black are great for the dirt etc...

Same here. I've never used putter covers. Also, when some guy 3 groups ahead of me comes driving back in a cart trying to find their 6 iron cover I want to scream.
