Set Gap Wedge vs Different Brand

tcatone5

Recommended Posts

I have a 4 wedge setup in my bag and the grooves on my SM6 48 degree wedge are wearing out I have the I500s and was going to get the power spec UW and have it bent to a 49 degree to give me proper spacing 49,53,57,61.

Do you prefer to play with the gap wedge from your iron set or going with a Vokey Wedge (just an example)

Neither scenario appeals to me but out of those two I'd go with the former because I'd be using the club mostly for full shots. Three specialty wedges would be too much.

It depends. For two years, I played the Calla X20 irons (later moved up to X20 Tours). The X20 PW was decent, but the set AW was a real headache. I had extreme problems with distance control, despite focused practice.

On the other hand, the TM SLDR AW was an excellent club. Meshed well on full shot with PW, and did well on those semi-fluffy greenside pitches that don't rate a SW. (SLDRs still in a backup bag.)

In my prior wedge set-up I had set PW and G, S, L from Cle CG14. I found that on most days I used either PW or GW around the green - no particular reason I chose one over the other. Plus, I had yardage overlaps in my wedge matrix.

Solution: 48 + 54 + 60 (see below). 48 covers for PW and GW. And, I will probably keep it for my new Exotics CB Pro irons.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Recently dropped the gap wedge and I've never felt so free and alive.

What does the bottom of your bag look like now? I'm really wanting to drop mine and bend my PW weak (2*) then only have a (56*)

It has a lot of mud on it from the crappy weather we’ve been getting.

BUT if you’re referring to clubs I go PW which is either 46 or 47 or something to 53 then 60. Honestly I don’t really care anymore about equal gapping between club lofts. I can choke down on a pw and hit it where a 50* wedge would go so I’m good to go.

I usually have separate make of irons and wedges (and usually jdm), and nearly always have just a 52/58 or 50/56, but recently I picked a tour issue set of Adams XTD forged, so I did some research and now I have the matching GW 50/SW 55 /LW 60 too.

Should be fun.

OP, since you are gaming i500s(springy faces), I would go UW that matches the set for consistent feel and distances. ;)

Whatever works best. I've been using set 50 or 51* gap wedges for many years, but I've co-mingled GWs from other sets as long as they hit my yardage on full shots.

Someone once said that as far as PW’s, the decision is whether the player wants wedge type spin or set type spin. I see no reason why the AW decision should be based on anything else. Also, I’ve never seen a set AW that I would remotely consider putting in my bag ... they just look wrong ... something trying to be made into something it clearly isn’t. My wife’s bag? Yes, with a very slow swing speed, I think roll out distance is the prime consideration. But, I would hazard that anyone who hits the AW 105-120+ should likely be more concerned with precise drop and stop rather than 5-10 extra yards of rollout.

I think it's definitely a personal preference. I play CF16s and originally had the "A" wedge and absolutely despised that club. No real reason for it, just never hit it well. So ended up getting a replacement wedge to match the rest of mine (Cleveland RTX 2). On my very first shot with the replacement wedge, I stuck it to 6 feet and knew our relationship was real.

I have a different take. I have no use for a wedge above my vokey 56°, I like to manipulate face for more loft. So I have an extra club spot to play with. I carry a 52° Vokey for shots I want some loft and to stop relatively quickly, I also carry a 50 gap wedge that is a match to my 900 hot metal set, for lofted shots I want to run a bit.

Yep. You know when she’s “the one”. I love my Hogans but I’m not nuts about the PW. I went searching for something else.

I messed around with a couple brands and then I put a Ping 46 glide 2 into play and I knew, that very first round, she was “the one”. I Used it for 4 approach shots and every one was inside 8 feet. Chipping and pitching around the green felt wonderful. After a few more rounds of incredible approach shots my buddy started calling it “the magic Ping”.

She was so good to me that I now have a harem of Pings. She and her 3 friends, the 50 gap and the 54 and 60 stealth have come to live in my bag. I am a very happy man.

For me...this question has always come down to how well I'm hitting the ball and what iron set I'm working with. I have twice played gap wedges that matched my set, Z545s and P790s. Both situations were cases where the PW in the sent the ball pretty far. Going from either of the PW to a 50 degree specialized wedge left a big gap in yardage for me. These set wedges were essentially 11 irons for me (PW would be a 10 iron). I just need something with some forgiveness that I could swing. With the 790s, I actually played 4i-AW and then a 52 (and 58) degree wedge. While the lofts weren't gaped evenly, the distances were (my 50 degree P790 AW flew a lot farther than a 50 degree Milled Grind wedge did!).

Now that I'm back to hating the ball well, I go with the set PW and then 3 specialty wedges from there. The specialty wedges open up flexibility in my short game and allow me to do things I can't make an "iron set" wedge do. I also see much better distance control.

Every club in the golf bag is a trade off, you just have to look at what gives you the most milage.

The set wedge for me because I use it for full shots and like the extra forgiveness.
