Having played this weekend most of the courses should be in fantastic shape this week. Had tons of rain last week and the week prior, but this week is set to be sunny and warm so most of the courses should be dried out and doing well. I heard Carlton Oaks had some flooding, and Torrey South is undergoing reconstruction.

Really? Gonna rain tomorrow (possibly) then another huge storm Fri night into Saturday. Saturday is gonna be bad. Sunday rain too.

Not sure if you're familiar with the channel Golfholics on youtube, but they recently put up a course vlog playing Torrey North. You can probably get a good idea of what the conditions of North look like since the vlog was filmed only a few weeks to a month ago.

I'm not positive but I thought I remember them saying in the video the South course is closed at the moment while they do renovations. I could be wrong, and the vlog was filmed probably close to a month ago so possibly things have changed since then, so don't quote me on it.

I think you'd be better off enjoying the North course until the renovations are done on the South

Torrey North if you can get on.

Torrey south isn't worth the money because you will be out two holes.

Crossings at Carlsbad is in decent shape.

Aviara is pristine right now since the Kia Classic just finished up.

Mission bay is a short course but I believe is the only one in SD that has night golf.

Conditions here in SD are promising after one of our wetter winters in a long time, but most courses are doing their spring maintenance right now and it’s hard to find a place that hasn’t just aerated. Normally at this point in the spring we haven’t seen rain in a couple months and in June the inland courses are starting to show some stress from water restrictions, but this year we’ve had rain even up to last week so I think June will look good. Note we have “May grey/June gloom” with a marine layer along the coast in those months so you’ll often not see the sun along the beach.

No such thing as seasonal rates here. We’re a year-round golf destination.

thanks for the response. I'll be staying in Pacific Beach area. I haven't mapped out where to play, but i'm sure i'll get a round in, maybe 2. Hopefully the conditions stay good and your thoughts will hold true for June. We'll be there late June. Reading a bunch of the other SD discussions, i'm thinking Torrey South is out as it sounds like they're still working on some holes. I'm considering Torrey North, Balboa, Coronado (I think that was the name?). While I don't like the cost of South, i'll drop it if they are finished by then. I'm trying to stay close-ish to the place were staying... I'm excited as I haven't beento SD since I was young.

Course conditions everywhere should be excellent by June. Torrey North and Balboa are a great combo. Coronado's layout is kinda boring to a lot of people but the scenery is beautiful especially on the back nine. If you don't want to pay overpriced Torrey North and you could only play two times I'd suggest playing Balboa and Coronado. They're both around $60 with cart prime time rates I believe. Then take in a baseball game at Petco Park in the evening afterward. Everything is roughly 20 mins from PB.

I'm with vaporz. Coronado and Balboa are nice value tracks when they're in good shape. I don't find Coronado boring, but I guess the only time I actually head down there to play it is in November when the Coronado City Am is contested. Problem with Balboa is that there seems to be small windows when the course is in good shape. I haven't been out there in a while, so I can't comment on the condition. Torrey is in great shape right now. I'd actually recommend playing the South course even with the renovation. The holes that were closed when I played a few days ago were 4 and 5. 4 is a good hole, but 5 is relatively forgettable. They've "modified" the course so that 2 par 5's are split into a par 3 and a par 4. These holes are 6 and 13. When I played on Saturday with the mens' club, we just played 6 and 13 as par 5's and didn't bother with the temporary green par 3s. I'd recommend you do that as well if you decide to tee it up there. North Course is cool too.

^No. All tracks are very similar conditions. These are public tracks, not country clubs. Tee to green leaves a lot to be desired but the greens are the highlight of all these tracks. The newly redesigned Torrey North still has hard, shaggy bent grass greens and the Poa Annua hasn't propagated fully yet (at least 5 more years). Balboa and Coronado are Poa Annua greens. Balboa is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month. It's my favorite course so I'm biased. There are also tons of bars/restaurants right near the course in South/North Park and it's a convenient location to the 5 North back to PB.

Bring extra balls for Balboa. Torrey North and Coronado are more forgiving in terms of not losing balls.

why extra balls? I should be hitting everything in the short stuff right? lol. Good advice. I've played at some really nice public courses - but none of the REALLY nice ones are municipal. Even with the muni's I've played some pretty good ones. Of course none compare to a CC or a place like Pronghorn (one private one public course), but they were still nice.

I don't think the City is going to let the Poa infest the NC. I understand they have intentions of keeping it BG with extremely "hard" greens (figuratively and literally) speaking.

Played the north course this weekend for the first time in a while. I forgot how firm they get these greens. They weren't quick, but bounced like concrete. With the wind blowing, it was nearly impossible to stop anything. Definitely have to use some strategy and pick your landing spots carefully.

Well try as they might I don't think it's possible. The NC already has greens that are spotted with Poa. Just a matter of time before it takes over. I don't think the city has the maintenance budget to have people out there picking the Poa from the greens. Played there on Saturday, and every green has spots of Poa throughout.
