40th Birthday trip, help plan

Recommended Posts

So, I've got permission from the wife to take a 40th birthday golf trip. It is most likely going to be my brother and I. Maybe, maybe we would have another 2 to fill out a foursome. My plan is to drive from NJ on a thursday after work (leave NJ by 2), it's 10 hours away so we get in late and want to hit the ground running for 3 full days of golf (fri, sat, sun). Then I need to be back in NJ monday by bedtime, so leave Pinehurst area by 11-12 AM.

I want help planning my trip. I obviously want to play #2. Otherwise I'll play anywhere in the area. Stay anywhere in the area. We are going to be going mid-late september.

I'm looking to play as much golf as possible. I'd be totally fine with 36 a day, or 18 and then the cradle. So I guess I'm asking for an itinerary, if you were going down to pinehurst for your first trip, what would be your itinerary?

Below is what I sort of quickly came up with after reading through a few threads

Friday: AM: Pin needles or mid-pines/PM: #4

Saturday: AM: #2 / PM: The cradle

Sunday:AM: Pine Needles or Mid-Pines /PM: #8

Monday AM: Tobacco road on the way out of town?

Personally I'm cool with golf all day, then chill/relaxing at a cool clubhouse/restaurant for the evening and going to be early.

Thanks for any help.

If you want to know for sure you're playing #2, you need to stay at the Pinehurst Resort, or one or two other places in town (try the Pinecrest Inn as a possible). Pinehurst can book you on other courses, but other places can't book #2 in advance. While you're there, my personal list would include:

#2

#4

#8

Mid Pines

Pine Needles

Dormie Club

Tobacco Road

Those are all pretty close, with the exception of Tobacco Road, which is around a 1/2 hour drive north, towards RDU airport.

And as you suggest, the Cradle and Thistle Du wherever they fit in. Pinehurst will offer packages that include dinner, but that's not necessary. The food at the Pinehurst restaurants is excellent, but there are plenty of other great choices, at all levels of pricing and cuisine. But staying in the Village, you can walk to a bunch of pubs and restaurants easily.

I'll be in Pinehurst next week. Below is our itinerary:

Thursday - Fly in RDU, Tobacco Road 1:20 PM, head to Pinehurst after the round

Friday - Pinehurst #2 9:00 AM tee time, lunch afterwards then the cradle and thistle du in the afternoon

Saturday - Dormie 7:45 AM tee time, lunch, 1:50 PM tee time Pine Needles -> Mid Pines is having a member tournament that morning otherwise we would've done MP and PN on the same day.

Sunday - Pine Needles 8:09 AM tee time, lunch and depart for RDU for 6:50 PM flight back home

Do to not staying at Pinehurst we will not be playing the newly renovated #4 or #8. I guess I will just have to come back some time!

I would do the following. Reason being as mentioned if you are not staying at the resort you can only book No. 2 and No. 4 24hrs in advance

Friday: Pine Needles AM/ Mid-Pines PM. You can book these out further in advance so you can have set tee times. combine with being across the street/same property from each other it make most sense to play these two on the same day. Gives you a good warm up round on Ross courses in the Sandhills, and allows you to sit at the porch at Mid Pines have a beer and watch groups come in at the end of the day.

Saturday: Call and arrange tee times on Friday. Depending whats available (you may need to be flexible less so with a smaller party) play No. 2/Cradle or No. 4 & No. 8*. Make your tee times for the following day while there on Saturday in the Pro Shop.

Sunday: Play No. 2/Cradle or No. 4/No. 8* depending on what you were able to play on Saturday.

Monday: Do not change. Play Tobacco Road on the way out

*No. 8 is not on the main resort complex. It has its own clubhouse and you will have to take a shuttle from the main clubhouse to No. 8, fairly easy just good to know.

For my above itinerary, we are not staying at Pinehurst resort, but were able to book our tee time for #2 30 days in advance through the Airbnb that we booked. The house we rented is in the Pinehurst village, I believe on course #3 somewhere, but the host was kind enough to book our tee time 30 days out for us. It's a good option to save $$ and still be able to book your tee time for #2 in advance.

Does the host have a membership? Do you have the airBnB link? Is there some way to filter results to places that have a membership and can make reservations?

Above is the link to the Airbnb. I don't think you can filter by whether or not they have a membership. Honestly I think we just got lucky and we asked Ruby, the host, after we had booked the house and she said it was no problem for her to book a tee time for us, but she could only do it once we were 30 days out from the date we wanted. I am sure there are other properties in the area that have this same option so maybe you can ask the host prior to booking if that's an option?

Don't forget Dormie Club (a Core/Crenshaw design in the middle of nowhere down there and an incredible experience) assuming it is still operational!

I would definitely suggest Dormie as well BUT I think Dormie is all private now; which is a shame as it awesome!!!

IMHO...you gotta play Pine Needles!! And Tobacco Road is fun too!

Have fun and welcome to your 40’s...the time in your life when your body begins to break down for absolutely no reason. Just kidding...sort of.

  • 5 weeks later...

Change of plans, decided to to scotland and extend it by a day, so 4-4.5 days of playing. Gonna stick to the St. Andrews area.
