Boiling Water To Remove Graphite Shaft from Persimmon head

Recommended Posts

Have a persimmon that someone has installed a graphite shaft in that I am attempting to remove. I have read about submerging the head covered in a plastic storage bag into boiling water, but that does not seem to be getting it done. I am thinking the epoxy that was originally used has a higher melt temperature than 212 degrees. Has anyone successfully used this technique before, is there anything else I can try? Maybe I just need to let it sit in the water longer. Have tried twice, will not budge.

If you are trying to save the head, cut off the shaft and drill out the remainder from the head. Boiling water isn't nearly hot enough to break down epoxy.

Edit....oops, someone beat me to it.

Question from soneone that has not done this before...in regards to the step bit, won't that give me a conical hole? I think the TT shafts that I will be putting in these are parallel tip could I use something like this?

A .335 reamer would be good for the final clean out but drill bits are better to remove the bulk of the shaft.

Okay, sounds like I need both, many thanks gentleman!

The other poster wasn’t suggesting using an actual stepped drill bit. He meant start with a small bit and then a slightly larger, and a slightly larger until you just get the bulk of it out. You just need to be careful not to take too much.

As Ness suggested a reamer to finish it off precisely is a nice idea. You can do the most precise work with a hand chuck, not a drill.

Many thanks to all, I will proceed cautiously.

I used that method once or twice. Not my preferred approach, but if you're trying to save the shaft, it's an option. The problem is if someone used high-heat epoxy, no matter the choices, you have to assume you're going to damage the shaft. So, as others have recommended, cutting, drilling and a little heat will work. I assume you already know the standard technique of heating a rod and then shoving it down the shaft. I'd actually try that first. Generally, you want to get the heat as close to the epoxy as you can, and that's where the boiling bag approach falls down. It can take a while sitting in the water to soften the epoxy. Neither persimmon nor graphite is the best heat conductor.

I carefully drilled a hole that I can get a heated rod down. I forgot about that one, have never tried that one before so hopefully it will work. I already cut the shaft off so should not be too much of an issue, except I should have left a bit of stub to pull from. Would be very nice if it worked, drilling it out by hand makes me nervous on a head like this one.
