Played The Bay Point Club today (March 16). Beautiful day, but course is like a day or two after snow thaw and it rained last night. Everything was soaked. I was very, very surprised they allowed carts as there were many areas of ponded water and areas of supersaturation. Some of the cart path exits from the blacktop were muddy wheel ruts.

3 or 4 temp greens. Other greens were difficult to putt on, lots freeze/thaw bumps.

Generally typical very early Spring late winter transition conditions.

Newton Commonwealth GC is open today.
Maplegate is planning on Sunday, 3/24

  • Weather forecast for this coming week is very encouraging. Highs will bottom out on Tuesday in low 40’s but by the weekend - will be approaching 70 with limited precipitation until chance of rain on Sunday. This should do wonders for greenskeepers and hopefully will mean we see a lot more replies in this thread

Got an email from Shining Rock, they were supposed to open today but delayed until Thursday due to the snow the other morning.

Looks like this coming weekend will be the official beginning of the 2019 season in most of New England...

Played Swansea yesterday (aka Swampsea). 3 hours for front 9, walked off. Couldn't take it. Very wet/soggy conditions (not good when you have high bounce wedges and can't get any bounce - just cut under the ball all the time).

    From Titleist Guru Bob Vokey:
High bounce wedges are those with more than 10° of bounce, designed for softer turf, fluffy lies, and bunkers with soft sand.

    Putterham opens tomorrow...wear your boots...

  • Played two over the w/e: Acushnet River Valley and South Shore CC. Both were with GolfNow Deals.

Carts were allowed at Acushnet and the conditions were very good for late March. Greens were patchy colored and somewhat bumpy, so there were no or inconsistent reads and breaks. Overall pleasant day and for $30 with cart for 18, a bargain.

South Shore CC was a whole different deal. $22 for 18/walk, but I only played 9. Conditions were marginal at best with only one set of tees with a set of mats on one hole. Not a big deal, but 3 out of the first 9 holes were temp greens and not mentioned by the starter or Pro Shop. There was a sign on the Pro Shop that Hole 14 had a temp hole, but no others were mentioned. The guys I were playing with were not happy with the conditions as there were charged $30/18, also not told about the course conditions and were going to complain to the shop and asked for 9-hole comp.

I really like South Shore, but today's experience left me with a little sour taste in my mouth. Will go back, but later in summer when carts are allowed and the course is in better shape. I can't walk this course. Too much elevation changes for my legs.

Played William Devine Saturday. $40 walking only. Was in good shape for the time of year. Greens were recently punched and filled with sand so putting was basically an automatic 2 putt. some soft/wet areas in fairways and low areas, good overall with considering the time of year.

Played Leo J after work on Friday. Turf conditions probably as good as they will be all year. Weeds are still dormant and bare spots are at least soft...

Played Crystal Lake Golf Club in Haverhill April 6th - Teed off on time, Carts but Cart Path Only, but pretty frustrating on the course. It was extremely wet and mushy in the fairways. Good long drives would plug in to the fairways as well as iron shot with any decent elevation. No way to find them. "lost" 8 balls. Greens were in pretty decent shape and rolled well. Interesting course, first time I played , won't go back until has some chance to dry out, and I mean a lot.

You're a glutton for punishment. But I give you credit
(Separately, I thought there was still residual snow out there?)

  • raynorfan1raynorfan1 Members Posts: 3,519 ✭✭

Little bit of snow on 1 and 6 from the ski track.
Hitting off snow is a better turf condition than August will be...

William Devine is a little patchy but it's in great shape. Braintree is the same, and Sandy Burr is soaked. Leave that one alone for a month...
