Hey!

Fourball @ Stanton ridge (Qualified last year, didn't make match play)

Mid-am Brooklake (came close to qualifying too many times...)

NJ Open at Essex Fells (never tried)

Pub Links at Rutgers (Qualified last year - top 25)

Also looking at MGA events (IKE + Pub links).

And will enter the USGA four-ball at NJ or NY site.

Just try to be prepared by playing as much as I can (which is 1-2 times a week - not much I know) and then hit balls once or twice a week.  Really comes down to confidence and mindset.  Good luck to you!!

Met Public Links qualifier @ Blue Hill

Ike MGA Stroke Play @ Maplewood CC

US Amateur qualifier @ Hackensack GC

MET Open qualifier @ Haworth GC

I’ll probably play in the Suburban Cup later in the year and try to get into a couple other invitationals as well. I moved up here from Ga last summer to loop at Bayonne so if anyone wants to play practice rounds or just tee it up I’m always game!

i play pretty much anywhere i can find -- you name it, i'll play it. as for practicing -- when working on swing mechanics, i use our simulator in our apartment complex' clubhouse. as for real balls - i practice at the clubhouse golf center off sussex turnpike in randolph.

did you choose alpine over medford village for some reason? genuinely wondering -- my reasoning was my length advantage was better served at MVCC versus alpine where the real danger is in their greens.

I think I’m going to try the Mid-Am at Brooklake. Been several years since I’ve given it a go and maybe not taking it too serious and just go have fun I’ll do better than in the past when I was inevitably guilty of overthinking. I played a qualifier at Brooklake several years ago and shot 89, so at least I’ve seen the course a couple times and remember enjoying it.

you sign up? (yesterday it closed at 5PM) I haven't played brooklake but, i know i can go low at copper hill due to hitting a ton of driver/3w and short wedges.

Woke up this morning and realized I never logged on yesterday to actually register. Oh well. Would have been complicated getting the days off if I somehow qualified anyway.

Damn man. Copper hill is crazy easy - had a practice round yesterday and shot -2 with 4 birdies and 2 bogeys.

hey man --wanted to give you some insights.

1) the fairways are incredibly fair with regards to width

2) the rough can get deep in certain parts of the course, however, you can still find your ball and it's not so dense that you can't get your ball out.

3) the biggest defense of the course is hands down...the greens. tons of undulations, false fronts, pockets/bowls and ridges for you to have to navigate.

4) there are quite a few blind shots in to greens; in your practice round - make note of lines to take.

5) the par 5's are get-able. the ones that are uphill (9 and 18) -- find a good layup yardage for a smooth wedge into these greens to control your shots if you're on the limits of getting home in 2.

course notes - and clubs used off tees:

1) driver - straight away

2) driving iron/5w; ideal tee shot is 250-60y on the left side of the fairway as the water hazard is closer the further right you go.

3) driver/3w (depending how far you hit it); hit a draw or straight shot along the trees on the left.

4) par 3, plays downhill, play a half club less

5) driver, don't go left.

6) fairway wood from up box, driver from the back. water hazard left so, aim at the tree that's through the fairway to the right - you'll be good to go.

7) OB left -- either driver or a club to layup to a wedge number. crazy green.

8) par 3 - green cants left to right, plays even to yardage despite looking downhill.

9) driver

10) driver or 3w - depending on your length

11) par 3 - plays a half club more - hit the middle of the green regardless of pin placement.

12) driver or 3w - depending on your length, best angle is right middle of the fairway (flat spot/landing area)

13) 250y club or blast driver over the corner of the trees.

14) driver; stay out of the fairway bunker (lip is taller than you think)

15) driving iron or fairway wood - draw shot shape needed

16) driver

17) par 3 - front of the green is a good miss, long is dead (heavy rough); plays 1/2 club downhill or more depending wind direction

18) driver

**Reference - my driver is carrying 305y, 3w is 280y and 2i is going 260y.

I’m contemplating entering the State Open qualifier at Glenwood, where I’ve been a member for years and worked there through HS and college. There’s not a course on earth I know better. Ive never tried the qualifier, it always seemed like it would be hollow. Now I’m in my 40s and feels like something to at least try. I’m playing better this year than in I have in the past 6-7 years and I’m thinking it’s now or never. I have no delusions of making a run at the main event, but it would give me something to spend the next month working toward and I know I can put up a qualifying score if I play well. I’d also think two rounds at Bedminster would be a nice treat.

Plus in the back of my mind, knowing next year is the 100th Open I imagine it’ll be a big-time venue and maybe this experience would help next year if it’s at a place like Baltusrol, Plainfield, etc (or imagine Pine Valley). I just wonder what anyone else thinks, would it get an asterisk to qualify at my home course?

Playing the Mga Ike at maplewood. Haven’t been able to play much this year, but I grew up on maplewood cc for 20+ years (though haven’t played there in many years) and canoe brook was my home course for hs golf. Hoping to rekindle some of the old magic. Maplewood is a sleeper course. A lot of people see the 6200 from the tips and think I’ll rip this course apart. I don’t recall many tournaments there where the winner was better than par.

I was supposed to play Maplewood last week but it got rained out and I moved to Mendham because the date works better for me. I was able to get out and play Maplewood a few days before the event. I wouldn’t call it a sleeper course. It’s not a good course but it does have fast and difficult greens. It’s also very tight! Not a fun place to play if you are crooked or unable to control your shots into greens.
