there are several. google "golf gps software". here is a link

http://www.gps-practice-and-fun.com/golf-gps.html

this is one big reason why I won't spend $300 on a GPS. You can use a Windows Mobile phone and buy a $40 bluetooth gps and run it with free software.

btw. if any mods are reading this, how come this forum doesn't show in the main list. I had to access this from the right hand side links

No you are not WAAAY to early. In dev right now, we have the SDK and are on it. Can't say much more as I would end up being sod around here. Go ahead and PM me for more details so I don't end up like this guy (for spaming.) --> :partytime2:

Check with the folks at Intelligolf. The Eagle edition in version 9.? is GPS phone capable. They list some of the compatible phones, but a call or email to the CS would be worth it. I have version 8.3 for PDAs, and it's really nice for keeping scores and stats. You can track your shots, but it's via manual input on the scorecard. I've not used the GPS function because my PDA isn't capable of GPS or Bluetooth, but I've played with a few people who have used Intelligolf on other GPS-capable PDAs and phones and for $60 have never found it worthwhile to buy a separate unit. I've always gotten good CS from Intelligolf through the 3 purchases (1 buy + 2 upgrades) so I'd at least recommend you give them your info and see what they say. Ask if they refund if it's not compatible - they offered that to me when I did my last product upgrade. BTW, their library of courses was pretty good but not totally comprehensive like SkyCaddie. You'll love the scorecard and stats functions compared to what any GPS device currently offers.

  • 2 weeks later...

most of them are fairly small. you could get away with the 8g no problem. Music and software are the real memory eaters..

most of the golf gps courses are small txt files. Now if it is integrated with a map(picture) then they get larger, however not substantially.

Problem might be that the iphone gps reciever is "weak" and not like what you usually see in a WM pda phone. Also Apple's stupid closed system and not letting programs run in the background is why no one has released anything YET!

Apple has there own Operating system.

Intelligolf as it stands right now only runs on the Windows mobile platform and maybe PALM, and Blackberry.

Unless Intelligolf purchases the SDK from apple and then writes the new software IT WILL NOT BE COMPATIBALE.

FYI, they have listed the Iphone as "coming soon" for about a year now. They refused to release any info about where things stand now...so I'm just waiting. I'm betting the software I really want will be released soon, whether it's Intelligolf or not. The Iphone is just too sweet not to have this kind of software on it.

I seriously doubt that a true google map image and real-time gps is going to be in the works on iPhone (or any smart phone for that matter.) The actual data transfers for a WELL mapped course are actually very small. Graphics would be a huge memory hog on both the device AND the servers. Think about having to store a detailed image of every hole for the 32,000 courses world-wide. AND getting the proper image size would be a challenge by itself. Add to this, that the iPhone runs one app at a time on the screen. The other open aps run in background. So trying to have gps waypoints with yardages overlay on maps - not sure it is possible.

An effective GPS on the iPhone really should not be much different than any other one. Basically give me the distance to the center, front and back of the green, as well as the distance to reach and carry any of the targets or hazards along the way. The idea is to give the info a golfer needs, on their device - and not require them to purchase a separate GPS brick.

I'm actually not a fan of the "google earth" graphics. I personally (even though it would take more time) would rather them go in and trace the map and make it a vector based image with icons and colors representing the different elements on the hole.

I looked at Golfflyover.com for my home course and the image was taken at a point when the sun wasn't a 12 o'clock, so you go long shadows that made it difficult to see where a tree started and stopped.

Iyardage is on the right track... with the look anyway.

I don't just want numbers... I want virtual yardage book.
