AWT 2.0 Stiff vs Modus 105 Stiff

Just to get this out of the way, I've done significant searches and have read all comments I can find comparing these two shafts, just checking to see if there are any fresh thoughts on this. There have been varying opinions on these two and I want to know if anyone out there has played both and/or moved from one to the other.

I hit both extensively with the G410 head the other day and my experience is opposite what PING lists. I found the Modus 105 Stiff to fly slightly lower and play slightly stiffer than the AWT with slightly lower spin. I will admit, they are very similar in feel and performance but there are subtle differences.

The reason I'm laboring is because I really like the idea of the AWT weight progression and I'm thinking of a set of AWT 2.0 Stiff hard-stepped once to play closer to the Modus 105 Stiff.

Anyone else find what I've found? Extensive experience with these? Selected one over the other and/or then changed to the other?

Thanks in advance!

I have hit both quite a bit. The Modus 105 definitely launches and flies a little lower than the AWT 2.0 but I wouldn't say that it plays stiffer to flex than the AWT 2.0. It's a little heavier than the 2.0. Maybe that is what you are feeling.

Weight is a tricky comparison. Modus in stiff is 106 grams.

The AMT stiff varies from 100 gram in the 4 to 110 in the wedge, so on average, they are essentially the same.

For most people, The long irons will launch higher and feel softer, the short irons will launch lower and fell stiffer.

Here’s a whole thread on it.

I think the AWT is actually heavier than the Modus 105 when comparing 6 iron shafts. For some reason Ping shows the untrimmed weight on its website for the Modus and XP 95, but trimmed weight for all the other stock shafts available. So the trimmed weight for the Modus-S would be 100g, compared with 104g for the AWT-S.

I think Ping is wrong in how they have classified the Modus 105. They show it as higher trajectory and softer feel than the XP95. The Modus 105 is considered by many to play soft to flex, so I wouldn't be surprised if the AWT was slightly firmer. To me they feel pretty similar.

I think for the majority of players the difference in trajectory between AWT and Modus 105 is negligible. Both are Nippon shafts, so I would decide if you want constant or ascending weight shafts in your irons - then decide if you want to HS. Call Ping if you need more info, they have certain customer service reps that have very detailed knowledge of the various shafts, just ask to speak with a shaft expert.

Ping rep. told me the Modus 105 flies higher than XP95. I draw the ball, so need a heavier shaft even though I love the performance of Modus 105. AWT stiff is helping, but might have to go KBS Tour?!
