The guy that gloats

Recommended Posts

Played a match yesterday against a friend. Also got paired up with another twosome.

Pretty intense match with some coin on the line and came down to the final putt on 18. My friend makes and I miss the putt and he wins it. I go to take off my hat and to shake his hand to congratulate him and he starts jumping up and down and shouting “I WON!! I WON!!”

I found it a bit immature and like of throwing salt in the wound. One of the guys in the group says to my friend “you need to learn to not gloat after a win...very unsportsmanlike”.

Sure, i lost, he won, but really got under my skin.

Are there others out there with guys that gloat experiences?

It sounds like he acted like this was the first time he beat you? If so let it go but if this is a normal occurrence with him then he needs to listen to the advice of the other guy in your group

My friends and I will always congratulate the winner say good match, or something along those lines. There is usually some smack talk after the round but its always in good fun. I have never seen anything like that before. He should be embarrassed to act like that to the point that a random tells him to relax.

Take it as a compliment.

You're so tough an out that he couldn't contain himself once he finally got past you.

Or he's a di*k.

A little bit of both Jimmy.

Just a bit sad that a close friend would act like such a d*ck. I think I was more embarrassed over his unsportsmanlike behavior in front of 2 strangers than I was upset about the loss.

Guy sounds like a bit of a jackwagon ... But at least it's good motivation for the next round.

My dad taught me that in a friendly money game if you win more than the cost of lunch you simply say "nice match. Can I buy you lunch?"

I was good friends with an ex-mini tour player who gave me three a side, and when I won (rarely) I would do the "Dance of Victory". When I lost, I crumpled up the money and threw it at his feet. He would smooth out the bills, walk around the green waving them to our imaginary gallery, while mocking me for my age and lack of hair. OP's guy has no game at all.

Classic, I love it.

Nothing like being to rub it in a little bit (as long as it’s friends who take it in the spirit intended).

The OP’s situation however didn’t sound quite like that.

I assume that you’ve played against him before, what’s he usually like? If this behavior is a one off, I wouldn’t get too wound up over it. If he pulls this nonsense on a regular basis, I’d start being busy.

G: played with him a million times and I’ve learned to just tolerate the guy over time but I now think time is up w him.

Slowest guy at our club, limited understanding of the rules (asks if he gets free relief w sitting behind a tree), argumentative about rules he has no clue about and now with the gloating when he wins...takes all the fun out of the game for me.

I think this added information makes it a no brainer. Kick him to the curb and find a new group. It very well dramatically improve your overall enjoyment of the game.

Life is too short to play with people who make the game miserable, or even substantially less fun. If you like the guy off the course enough to stay friends with him, then have a come-to-jesus talk over a beer that you buy him. If he's not willing to adapt, then tell him you can still hang out but it's not a good idea to play golf together.

Lot's of golfers make a big thing out of winning a match especially if they didn't think they had a chance. As for salt in your wound, suck it up and be happy for your friend. It's a damn game that's all. We win some and lose some.

He must not be a close friend.

If my friends did that, I’d laugh it off and end it with, here’s your money Word not allowed...now take me to lunch/dinner. Then on my next win I’d make sure I’ll dance around him, too!

2 reasons why this would happen:

1. He’s an a******; or

2. He’s “repaying the favour”

My friend (who is also a coworker) and I play for one American dollar. Which goes up on the office wall as a trophy with a post-it note, proclaiming the winner and the loser. Is that too much gloating?! :D

(We both often note that those $1 losses/wins are much more valuable than regular wagers involving much larger dollar sums!)

I do have a group where our gloating and ribbing is completely over the top and outrageous. But, we have all been buddies for a long time and have always gloated and ribbed each other in anything (video games, basketball, golf, poker, you name it.)

If any of us play dollar games with somebody that we are not as familiar with, we tone it down and just follow the other peoples lead. Some love to just get the ribbing in right away, and others are more serious and tame. I would just talk with your buddy and tell him to knock it off if you do not like that. If he refuses, pick up another guy to play with.
