Club fitting change - 105mph swing speed from 6.5 to Reg shaft??

Recommended Posts

Just got a clubfitting. been playing Taylor Made blades from 2003 with Rifle Flighted Shafts 6.5 125g-130g. i was just fitted with Taylor Made P790 with Fujikura Pro 95 shafts in Regular stiffness. I'm 42 and having some back problems but my swing speed with a driver is still in the 105 range. I was shocked to see that I'm getting 20 more yards of both carry and total distance from a 6 iron. I'm averaging 196 yards from 176 yards on the Trackman with it seems minimal dispersion.

The clubs are currently not built yet so i can cancel order. Has anyone heard of such a drastic change in shafts (i.e. dramatic change in stiffness, from steel to graphite)?

Does it make sense that these would work well for me? I have a draw swing naturally and my tempo is fast generally.

I'm paying a lot for them so I'm worried. I am also worried about the heads being different weighting than with steel and not be able to change back to steel.

Please help!!

Curious if you were fitted at Club Champion?

To your question, I don’t think the results are surprising. Even though you may have felt comfortable with your old clubs, it doesn’t mean they were correctly fit for you. Also, the difference in tech and forgiveness between what you have and what you have been fit to is light years in difference.

Just the FAR stronger lofts and hot faced, low and deep COG club design of the p790 will give you at least 15 more yards than your old blades.

The light shafts will bump you a few more. I do find it VERY VERY difficult to believe you should be in a regular 95 gram graphite if you still move a driver 105 mph and have a quick tempo. Without even seeing your swing I’d bump them to stiffs.

If you hit them and saw the data against your gamers, what is there to doubt? Most clubfitters aren’t going to do things arbitrarily if they know what they are doing. Leave it to the guy or gal who does it for a living versus people you’ve never met behind a keyboard.

The 790's are built off a 45* PW, which has become pretty standard, so the lofts are not super jacked. Being that there is no industry standard regarding flex, these new shafts may be the equivalent of stiff in other brands. Have a 6 iron built to the new spec, take it out and play with it on an actual course, and check out your results.

I have the p790's with Fuji Pro 95 shafts, but in stiff flex; great combination. My driver ss is also around 105 mph. I am happy with stiff flex. If you have a really smooth transition without an aggressive transition, then this may work for you. I would think that a stiff flex would probably be better, but so hard to know without more details about your swing, or seeing it in person. Did you try the stiff flex of the same shaft, and if so, what did you notice? I would be more concerned about dispersion, if the regular is too soft for your swing.

I'm in the 105-110 range with driver and I was fit for Fujikura Pro i95 in stiff in my irons.

I put them in my Cobra Amp forged.

They lowered my trajectory a bit and I also gained some distance. I was pleasantly surprised.
