Spiral wrapping by a nerd

So I usually just use 2" grip tape cut to length when gripping. Decided if I was going to use a better shaft I should use a better method to install a grip.

Used the arc sin of the width of the tape divided by Pi times the diameter of the shaft; took the tangent of the result times Pi times the diameter of the shaft to come up with the slope needed to align the tape to get a nice spiral. I don't have a digital caliper so I was probably not as exact as I would want...

Here is my masking tape build up.

Thinking I want to get some 1" grip tape to finish the wrap just to be consistent...and the wife threw away my solvent catch bucket so I need to gank one from her. :(

There is a word for this but I can't post it... :slow_en:

To do it perfectly you need to redo the formula each time as the diameter of the shaft increases which each wrap. But I digress. :P

I resemble that remark...

FYI...3/4” grip tape...smaller than buildup...had to redo the calculation again and adjust for the difference in diameter between upper and lower part. Finally done. :)

And how does this differ from just a wrap of masking tape that's 1" wide with half a wrap for the bottom hand?....

I'd hate to see your calculations on building a set of irons!

Are you weighing out both parts of epoxy to properly calculate potential swingweight ? How about loss of weight from ferule turning ? Added weight for paint fill if changed ?

I don't care what anyone else says - I love it! I'd never go that far myself - but I can certainly appreciate the thought process :-)

Yes...and trying to figure out how to cut the tape length wise to narrow from one end to the other. Currently I have to adjust as I am going and put space in between one direction and put the edges together the other direction to make sure it is as smooth as a baby's butt with no overlap. I have a formula to measure out how much tape I need to cover a full and half grip pass but I need a backing board of material like the tape...maybe a 2 inch tape strip of backing to place on a board and then measure and cut...but it is a small cut so not sure if X-Acto knife or scissor it. :)

If you want the specs you have as target, the weight of both the epoxy and the ferrule is part of it, since its part of the play ready club, so why make fun of that? if you are ignorant to club specs, so be it, while others tried to make it the best they can if it makes a difference or not, so instead of wasting and hour or two in here, why not spend it making a club a bit better if thats what you are up to?

By the way, Grip sizing and shape is maybe the most overlooked fitting parameter and a good tape job is absolutely part of it and way to many dont know how to handle any of it, so its nice when someone shows up like this, keep them coming....things can only get better

if you ever go to visit PING and speak to an engineer you find out that taping was an obsession of Karstens , he designed a jig special for spiral wrapping , trained employees how to use the jig , and measurements for lower hand extra wraps, in short , impressive , and i really like seeing someone paying attention to details...well done sir...
