64 lob experiment

Recommended Posts

So I just picked up a Cleveland 64/10 Reg 588 from the Bay for £30.

I'm hoping it'll bump my 2 Hybrid from the bag in terms of being used more (obviously not for the same shots....)

After the failed 7 wood experiment (maybe it was just it being an old G5, maybe the shaft was too stiff but thing just wanted to go left) I'm hoping I get on with the 64 a bit better. Not expecting to use it for anything more than half swings tbh, so still a bit of a luxury club but who knows, we all have days where we hit hit the sand a lot and / or short side ourselves. Hoping it will come into it's own, especially now the greens are firming up.

Tips, comments, sanity checks welcomed!

PS, next experiment may be a UDI but guessing that may be a more expensive one.....

Currently going through the 64* experiment myself.

so far I am still on the fence if it gives me anything I can’t do with my usual 60*.

the experiment continues!

I play a 64 PM grind. It took me a solid 2 months to learn how to play it correctly, but it has become my go to from most greenside bunkers and anything short side. Especially great on down-green, fast-green chips. Full shots are, for me, in the 30-45 yard range and I get some pretty good zip on em.

Good luck with your experiment!

I’ve been using 64 wedges for over 12 years.  Be patient because most people need a fair amount of time to learn the ins and outs of when and how to play a 64.  If someone isn’t really comfortable with a 60 I feel they should stay away from a 64.

On rare occasions at a certain type of course I will either swap out the the 64 or the 7W for a 4 iron.

Cheers for the words of encouragement (and warning!)

I've got quite comfortable with all my wedges, not least my 58 so hopeful I will get on with the 64 too. TBH, I don't play many full wedge shots, aside from my actual PW. I much prefer the half and three quarter shot. also, I'm not one of those who needs to hit it full, hard and nip it to shoot it 10ft past and zip it back, I much prefer to slide it under and land it soft, hence the partial swing.

I'll let you know!

I have a 64 wedge , but it is rarely in my bag  depending courses and conditions.

64 is good  for bunker if the sand is hard and/or  for short  hight shoots  .

good also for  short chip/pitch in rough

Provided you put the practice time in, you'll be fine.  I played 52, 58, 64 for years, and loved that set-up.  I changed because the PW in a new set of irons created a gap that the 52* couldn't fill.

A 64* is a specialized tool - perfect for its intended job, but lousy for jobs that it isn't designed for (for me, that included full swings... reward was rarely worth the risk).  It requires practice to develop the skill set required for successful use , and more practice to maintain those skills.  I think it was worth the time.  My home course has small, fast, and severely sloped greens.  Short-sided and/or above a pin is certain death.  A 64* allowed me to get close/in far more times than I deserved.  It was also a great bunker option - especially when I needed to stop the ball quickly.

I have a 64* sm4 in my bag. I'm notoriously short on my approach shots so its nice to have an extra option getting on the green (according to my arccos app i use it roughly 4 times a round). I have a t-mb 3-iron that i hit pretty well and to the point that i hardly ever use my 3-wood now (less than once per round).  As much as wouldn't mind having a 2-iron it's probably a waste of space. Also, me and hybrids have never really gotten along which is one of the reasons why i wanted a 64* wedge in the first place

I just added a 64 to my bag. so far, i really like the option. I stretched my set out to cover more ground to add it. I play a 48 degree PW, 52, 58, 64. i feel i have everything covered. if anything I use the 52 the least.
