Anyone Else Have Problems Fitting Indoors?

LUMA

Recommended Posts

It's official, I cant do indoor fittings, especially for a driver. I am going to do all fittings outdoors from now on. I went into Edwin Watts to retire my Sub Zero with a TS3. The first 3 shots were fine, then all hell broke loose. It's obviously a mental thing. Not being outside, having a target to aim at, etc. My swings indoor are NOT the same as outside. I don't know what the **** happens. Longest drive was my second swing at 302 *not a great swing*. Shortest was 132 yards ground first shanked. There was a lot of really bad swings. About 90% of them. This doesn't happen outside or on the course very often.

Anyone else have issues, "mental", with fitting indoors? I just cant do it. I don't get the same "feel" for shots without being outside and having a target with real depth to look at. I feel like when I get in a hitting bay, I'm just blindly swinging away to the moon at nothing. :/

> I hate the bays too. First of all, every bay I've been in, was way too dark. They never have the correct length tee for the way i like to tee it up high. They never have tour level balls in there either. I can honestly say, I have never hit a club good in any demo bay.

Yeah, the lighting is weird in bays too. Dark and shadow like. It messes with my depth perception.

Agree with you on this. I can't do indoor fittings either. I'm a decent player at a 2 cap, so I generally have a pretty good feel for my swing and what shot type would be produced based on the feel of any given swing. For some reason, the visual representations of your shots on a simulator just don't jive with what you're expecting to see if you're outside, and it messes with you. I end up over compensating based on what the screen shows you. I think Club Champion does a good job, but I don't think I can go back there because of this exact issue. Outdoor fittings from now on for me as well.

I'm glad I'm not alone. I was starting to think I was a freak. I know someone who is a hitting bay legend and can't play to save their life on the course lol. Amazing golfer on the monitor, cant break 90 on the grass.

I only do fittings outside, on the grass. I'll putt indoors.

I have a very flat swing, and the bays at my GG are very small/narrow. I've actually hit the sidewall in my backswing before, so now am somewhat "claustrophobic" when it comes to hitting in ANY bay, no matter the size. I can test irons just fine, but bays are a no-go for drivers for me now. Even if the bay is huge, I just have this subconscious feeling that I'm going to hit the wall or ceiling and therefor don't put my normal swing on it.

Same issue here, the screen at our place shows everything going right when the numbers for dispersion say like 3 yards. I literally cannot get a feel for what is going on, and have no idea where the ball is actually going. It's a shame that so many places are relying on indoord fittings now for the trackmans/flightscopes/ect... instead of setting them up outside. I think from now on I will wait for the OEM to visit for their summer season and do the outdoor fitting. Only issue is half the season is gone by the time they come to visit.

Though I've not done fittings indoors, I can _completely_ believe this is an issue for some.

I grew up playing a lot of tennis, but absolutely hated playing indoors because the majority of indoor courts have lighting that does not suit my eyes. I was actually prone to flat out whiffing on a shot or two during any given indoor playing session. For comparison, I cannot remember a single whiff - ever - for a ball I had a fair shot of hitting outdoors. And this is over decades of competitive play.

Lighting and optics and how we react in different conditions can be a major factor.

I went back into Edwin Watts during my lunch break for the heck of it to give it another shot. It was worse than yesterday. I whiffed 6 shots completely LOLOLOL. The guy in the store said "Ive never seen anything like that before". I honestly think it's the lighting in there. I don't think my depth perception is accurate in there with florescent lights and shadows. Titleist will be coming out in May for outdoor fittings with Trackman here in Tallahassee. I'll be there!

No to the bays for me either, I feel cramped, can't tee it up as high and the simulator thinks all my shots are pushes when in reality I play a push draw. 6 HCP so I am pretty sure I would know when I hit a straight push. Outdoor fittings only for me, indoor is a waste of time and money for me.

Glad I am not alone. I hate hitting in bays, Golf Galaxy and Vans near me have very narrow bays. Vans has a net above the hitting area as well with a chain and hooks holding the netting certain areas. I have hit the wall in the bay at GG and hit the net above me in Vans. I absolutely lock up mentaly with a driver or fairway wood in a bay. Irons are just fine and hybrids don't seem to be an issue either.

Just to expand, I went to the PGATSS yesterday to test the Epic Flash Fairway Woods. Every shot I hit the data stated I was 30 yards offline to the right. I don't miss my 3 wood to the right, maybe a random fade here or there on a rare occasion. I draw my 3 wood. Every shot in the bay said I was offline right by 30 yards. I began to get flustered and tried to compansate, I began topping, shanking, and pulling everything. I walked out and was super defeated.

Stewing on it all day I went to an outdoor range this evening. Tested the Epic Flash again. Results were night and day, hit my regular shots, all was right again.

Shameless plug, but the Calalway Epic Flash 3 wood is legit, upgrading from my original Epic, absolutley smoked it!

I've had the same experience as the OP when hitting in bays at the big box stores. Usually carry a driver 245+, but can seldom get anything even close to 225 indoors. That all changed when I went to TXG in Toronto for an iron fitting last year. The hitting area was wide open, high ceiling and properly lit, not claustrophobic like a lot of the normal hitting bays. I was consistently hitting 6 iron 170+, whereas I can't even get it out to 150 at my local Golftown.

Yeah i get this too. You start getting odd results on shot's and this leads to compensating. Compensating leads to topping it, shanking, ground first, etc. Hitting bays are just all kinds of no good for me. I might be able to get away with irons but driver, no way.

I am in total agreement here. I went to Miles of Golf for a driver fitting a few years ago and I was short-arming every swing with the driver. I was hitting these low slices and snipe hooks because I mentally couldn't get past the thought of a ceiling above me. It was a garage type deal hitting to their driving range but I just couldn't make a normal swing. I haven't been fitted for a driver since.
