Tiger switched to lighter shafts in his woods?

Probably more of a feel thing. I went from 87 to 63 last season and I can say for sure you feel faster which can have the affect of promoting a smoother swing. With an 87 gram shaft it felt like hard work late in the round to put a good swing on the driver. This led me to swing too hard and hit balls where the bears live. The lighter shaft for me promotes a smoother, faster swing rather than a harder swing if that makes sense.

Go listen to the newest “Gear Dive” podcast with JW. He had Mitsubishi on and they were talking about Tigers shafts and why he switched to 60/70 from 70/80. They also talked about the product line and Rory.

heavy shafts promote good tempo.If you struggle with swing path do not not go too light; too easy to go over the top.I have done tests with 10 - 20 grams lighter in drivers ; and yes if tempo is good and you hit the center of the club you will gain ss. 28 grams =1 oz.every oz. in overall club weight reduction will give about 8 yards all things being equal.

According to a recent TXG podcast, they think it's more due to Tiger aging and probably starting to lose a little speed with heavier shafts. Going lighter could help get some speed back and maybe improve flight a little bit.

 

Unless the Trackman in the past few weeks has been off, I noticed Tiger only getting mid 160's ball speed when hitting his 3w. Could have been intentional but I've seen him in the 170's before. Maybe the old numbers were juiced up a little bit, who knows.

hopefully those guys who've been comparing his range swing and on-course swing are breathing easier. on the range he swings smoother (obviously a bit slower) than his previous on-course swings...he's thankfully been swinging smoother --

Speaking as someone with back issues, while not as bad as TW's. Going down in weight can make things a lot easier to swing. It is mentioned in the article and I would bet that was one of the biggest factors.

I took my driver from 65 to 39 grams and the 3-wood from 70 to 44 grams. Magic.

Yeah, he's getting old ;) as long as they make them better and lighter, I don't see a reason why a lot of guys don't change. The articles even mention he messed with the X100 lite in 2002-2003. Probably rocking them now.

I tend to disagree because of a plethora of Aldila shafts like the Phenom 50X and NV 55X among others from Mitsubishi Diamana 50X, and Fujikura Motore 55X, Matrix HD5 etc. And I would definitely not call IZ a leap in innovation for stability. For people who do not put a lot of strain the golf shaft, it is serviceable.

In 2007 my driver and fairways were 95g (driver was speeder 952)

Dropped to ~85 (speeder 869) then 75 (speeder 757) and then 65 (fuji TS 660TR) and now 53-55 in driver (Oban 55 and Bboard 53) .... 63 and 73 and the 3w and 5 woods

Of course I've gone from 40 to 51 in the same time frame. Aging sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the newer tech is more stable at lighter weights as well.

I am looking at at new driver and cant decide if i want a 70 gram or 60 gram shaft. I think I am going to go 70 because I find that as i get lighter I tend to hit a lot more hooks.

He went lighter because he can control his rhythm and tempo with the woods now, not just with heavy shafts. While everyone here was bashing Notah’s commentary, he mentioned this during the match play.

He was inconsistent and swinging way too hard. When he was on, he was on. When he was off, he was way off. He was trying to keep up with the youngins and just can't do that anymore. If you're sending a ball out there 290-310 that has to be good enough. You're not going to be Cameron Champ and blast it out there 350. Young muscles and flexibility and an non-surgically repaired back will help. Add technology to all that, it's not a fair fight. And Phil has never had any major injuries. There's your difference.

On top of that, Phil has always rotated significantly in all parts - hips, shoulders, and club length. It was all long, and all fast. Tiger created his speed through the difference between hip and shoulder turn AND straightening/locking his left knee, creating problems down the road. It put tremendous stress on his lower back.

He's swinging a lot easier now. Easier on the back and less ball speed but in the fairway more often. When he first came back it was 180 ball speed. Now it's 170. He still plays well (a little better maybe) and not losing much. It was funny seeing him having to hit a club or two more than the long hitters, but oh well. His 180 ball speed swing just was not manageable. Unfortunately with that speed he'll probably struggle to dominate. It may be a transition phase who knows before he picks it up again. Right now I think he's just finding a comfort zone with his new swing.

Shaft weight can change dynamic launch angle. Generally speaking, a lighter shaft will launch higher and (most of the time) with more spin. Given a different club head design, this can be used to dial in a preferred launch characteristic. In addition, a lighter shaft changes more with different types of swings. For example, I could see where someone very proficient with their swing (Like Tiger) would get a lower launching, lower spinning, more penetrating, more workable golf shot with an easier swing... and a higher launch, higher spinning, longer carry, straighter, less roll out (and less overall distance) shot with a harder swing. Heavier shafts tend to be more consistent through hard/soft swings.
