Upper New York Course Advice

Heading to the Finger Lakes area for a few days and Lake Placid for a few days in late May. Any advice on which courses are must-plays? I really enjoy links golf and kind of quirky layouts if that makes sense. Thanks in advance!

There will be guys with far more experience than I have. However the courses I always here about are Ravenwood in the FLX region (Rochester) and Thendara in the ADK’s. On your way to Lake Placid you could also do a layover at Turningstone, play twice if you wanted a twilight round (after 2) then play Atunyote in the AM.

Also En-Joie and Timber Banks are worth looks. Depends on how far you want to travel. There are a ton of courses if you just want to get out.

Whereabouts in the Finger Lakes will you be? Generally speaking that area can be large.

We'll be right around the Watkins Glen area.

Not far from Watkins Glen is Reservoir Creek...not a particular long course but it's a good and fair test. Some links-y style holes with rolling fairways and great elevation changes. The views are also pretty remarkable. A bit further away is Ravenwood in Victor (suburb of Rochester) like previously suggested. Then a bit more north is the Links at Greystone. Greystone is probably one of the more links style courses in the area, and when the wind kicks up it makes for an adventure. Very playable and fun, but can bite you.

Lake Placid Golf Club has 2 18-hole layouts and a short 9-hole executive style course. The Links course would be the one I'd recommend (over the Mountain course and the pitch and putt). Some beautiful views up there and in my experience the courses have always been in good shape.

Cornell Robert Trent Jones Course

Elmira has Elmira CC, Mark Twain (Donald Ross public), Soaring Eagles (public)

Corning CC

I think the best course would be the Robert Trent Jones at Cornell, Mark Twain fills your quirky wish, Elmira CC has the best first tee, Soaring Eagles is a really good course.... so many choices!

Ravenwood is a solid choice if you get up that way, Turning Stone in your way to Lake Placid, skip Timber Banks, Thendara up north......

Cannot help with The Finger Lakes but in Lake Placid I feel the Links Course would be a great play. About 30 minutes from LP is Saranac Inn (https://www.saranacinn.com/) which is a fine old-style course with nice views (and tricky greens).

Never played Thendara but it is 2 hours from LP...

Also, please prepare for any type of temps. In late May it might be 80 or it might be 40!!

I'd recommend Bristol Harbor on Canandaigua Lake.

Probably the best course on the west side of town. And they run great “hot deals” I’ve seen on Supreme.

I'm a member at Whiteface Club in Lake Placid. Very nice course, not long, but pretty tight with 90% of the course right to left and tight corners. The greens are perfect and they are rolling nicely for this time of the year. Great views of the Adirondacks.

I’m from Rochester. To echo others, I’d recommend Ravenwood, Greystone, Mill Creek and Bristol Harbor!
