Bending 2* strong loft

MCGolfTM

Recommended Posts

Currently testing P790 and P770. Finding that I like the P770, but distances are 5-10 yards short. Can that extra yardage be gained back with 2* stronger loft? Are there any other negatives to bending the P770 that strong? The P790 is longer and easier to launch but the feel on the P770 is much nicer to me. My ball striking is good but will take some getting used to with p770 to be the most consistent I can be.

2* should be no problem.

That said, unless you are trying to hit specific gaps WRT other clubs in your bag does you could just leave them as is.

Yes, I would love to keep my current yardages, but the P790 are stronger lofts. I’m not sure P770 at the same lofts as P790 would be as long.

If you bend the irons strong, the bounce will decrease by the same amount (i.e. 2* stronger loft = 2* less bounce), and the offset will increase slightly (I've seen ~0.03 inches per 1* mentioned but I am not as sure on this figure). Most people seem to say that bending a club up to 2* either way is OK in terms of how it will play.

Okay to do? Probably. Will it produce the result you are looking for? I wouldn't put a ton of faith in it. Typically, the loft gap between irons makes up about half the distance between the two, the other half coming from the additional swing speed from the additional length. In short, if you have 10 yd gaps, about half of that comes from the loft difference (typically 4*) and the other half comes from the 1-2 MPH swing speed difference you typically see between the lengths. That's not a rule, but fairly typical.

In the end, you are talking about two different irons, with different lofts...and heads that are built differently with the 790s being built to produce additional ball speed. It's going to be hard to over come the gaps without something else changing. In the end, you can always "try", I just wouldn't put a lot of faith in it.

Thanks for the input, this is great info to consider as well. It is still 55-60* up hear and early in the season, but I am noticing gaps between the two sets of irons, naturally. I expect the same gaps to remain even when in mid season form, just getting all normal yardages back with temp, swing, etc.

My biggest issue with both sets is that I’m thinking the P790 will be slightly longer than my ideal yardage, while the P770 will be slightly shorter. So I will have to adjust one way or the other. The fully forged feel in the P770 and workability is what keeps me coming back, although the P790s have great feel and I can work them some as well. I guess it will come down to forgiveness and consistent yardages in all conditions.
