How do you think the women will fare at the ANWA?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if masters merchandise will be available? Also, will concessions be open? Thanks.

I am really excited/intrigued to watch this. I am especially hopeful that some of the originally intended shots and landing areas are brought back into play with the women being shorter overall (in shot distance not just height) than the men. Hopefully they are able to think and tack their ways around the course and not just over-power it.

The women will likely shoot some very respectable scores. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see 66 or 67 leading.

Love to see Haley Moore play well .

Watched her play a good bit on college. And she hits the ball hard. Just watched the piece on her on morning drive and was surprised to hear of her troubles with her own teammates as a underclassmen coming on to the team. Amazing how jealousy brings out the a****** in some folks.

I certainly would not expect them to play the championship tees. That would be silly imo. They might play back on a few holes-12 comes to mind- but the question is on most holes is there really a choice? Do they have any tees besides the Masters tees and the member tees. I recall reading there are just the two boxes on each hole but I certainly could be incorrect. If they play the standard member tees the ladies will score very well.

Yeah maybe. They also might feel as if they have a bit more "freedom" to issue a sanction, possibly.

I know I saw the card yardage and want to say it was 6600 and some change. I’ll be surprised if anyone hits the 60s.

At 6600 yards there might be a couple rounds in the 60's, but I agree, it will be tough.

Looking at the card I see no par 5 is close to 500 yards. Only 3 par 4s are 400 or better. Two are 400 even and hole 10 is about 450. Hole 4 is the longest par 3 at 170.

Since they decided to make an example of a young am a few years ago, the ladies better snap to!

Watched the highlights last night on the first round at Champions Retreat. 2 68's and a few 69's is respectable. I believe the yardage is 6400+(?). Gonna record all the action Saturday. I can't see them going too long yardage-wise on AN with the age of some of the players.

Yardage is listed as 6365. Some of these girls are really long. My daughter is a DI college golfer and has played with many in the field over the years in junior golf and the USGA Women's Am/Girl's Junior. Haley Moore and especially Jennifer Kupcho are very long hitters with 150+ ball speed off of driver. I expect that the longest players to score well from 6365 at AN, but the true determining factor will be speed of the greens and the hole locations.

From 6365, absent a very difficult weather scenario (very windy or windy/cold), we should see these young women score very respectably. Nobody I know who has played Augusta from the members' tees has said it's overly difficult. Even with greens at 13, my guess is that the average score of the field will be about 74 - 75. Low round will be 68. If the greens are slower, I expect both of those numbers to be a bit lower.

But who knows, right? :-)

Edited to add: Just remembered these are amateurs. If they are all elite lady amateurs, I'm guessing my number above will be close. Just don't know their college stroke averages, which would help in estimating scores.

Two girls made it who play for the University of Texas, who are currently ranked in the top five.

Kaitlyn Papp has a 72.08 stroke average.

Agathe Laisne has a 72.24 stroke average.

Both are sophomores.

I remember Dan Jenkins writing a number of years ago that ANGC plays well to a mid-handicapper. It's not one of those courses that's trying to send you home crying. If you shoot 82 at your home course, you'll shoot your 82 at ANGC. However, what it does exceptionally well is protect against low scores. If you want to go low, you've got to have a full bag of shots and know a lot about how to navigate the course. In that sense, it's a good "members" course as opposed to a good "resort" course. It's not about yardage or even the elevation changes or the greens. It's about the fact that there isn't a level lie on the whole course. Every shot has to be feathered one way or the other, and the margin between a good result and a terrible result is very small. So, it holds up strongly to members who get to play it a lot.

Man, you didn't even come close. Note I'm being sarcastic.

Low round was 67 and average score was just over 75. Good call Obee.
