Wedge To Pair Mac 985s

I'm putting together my first classic bag to have a little fun with so far my bag consists of:

Cleveland Classic TC15 1,3&5 woods

Macgregor 985 irons 2-10 iron

Macgregor VIP 600 Ironmaster putter

I'm guessing the 10 iron (PW) is closer to a modern day GW, so I'm looking to throw a sand wedge in the 56-58 degree range in the bag. Anybody have any suggestions for a wedge to throw in with this set? I looked at a 985 11iron, but there didn't seem to be much heel relief on it. Not sure if clubs of the era were opened up as much as they are today. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

That’s a nice looking bag you have listed there, the 985’s are a good choice, I’ve always like the looks of those.

One thing I like about many of the classic sand wedges are the curved leading edge. I picked up a 1970’s era Hogan Special Sand Iron with a curved leading edge and the ease at which I can open it up to hit the ball straight up when I short side myself green side is better than I could with many modern sand wedges. In fact, I also carry that wedge now when I play my modern KZG irons.

I’d say look for a curved leading edge sand wedge, maybe a Mac “Great Scot” which has a fun Scottish character on the back, or some MT wedges I’ve seen also have the curved leading edge.

If you don’t necessarily need to go Macgregor, Wilson has some classic designs like the R-90 and R-61. I just bought an R-61 Sandy Andy and it is as good as my Hogan for opening up for some lob shots greenside.

don't bother with Mac wedges, all Mac tour players used other wedges, try the classic WILSON wedges or repos of that era.

I thought Mac PWs were 11 irons, with the 10 iron being the putter? My '69 MT1's have the PW as an 11-iron.

@57Staff, I'm not sure on the 11 iron vs. 10 iron question. My set came with 2i-10i, with the 10i appearing to be the next iteration after the 9i. I'm just getting into the classic clubs, so I'm not completely familiar with practices at the time.

With my Armour 985’s I use a Tommy Armour sand wedge. It’s heavy. The head is 335 grams. It doesn’t have a model number on it. It just says sand iron on the sole. If you can find one they are really solid. I would post a pic but it just got stripped yesterday and won’t have it back till Saturday. I’ll post a pic then.

From this era, equipment names are not important.

Just use something that works.

That could be anything from a MacGregor Penna Wedge to a Wilson Sandy Andy R-61.
