Dallas/Ft Worth Golf in late May

I am traveling for business to DFW area in late May. I will have a Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday for golf. I might try 36 for Wednesday. I have never golfed in the DFW area but when I travel to a new city I like to play the best available and bucket list type courses. I don't have any private course connections. My criteria: Excellent course conditions, challenging well thought-out layout, architectural significance. I am less concerned about cost and I don't care about clubhouse, eating facilities etc.. Its just about the golf. I will have a car. I also don't mind driving 1-2 hrs if the course is worth it. I have been searching the forum and I have seen Old American come up quite a bit maybe paired with Tribute. Although, I am not sure if I am excited about a tribute type course. Is Pine Dunes worth it? Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

I like Old American but do not like Tribute. Stay at Stonebriar Westin Tuesday night and then you can play Stonebriar Fazio Wednesday and Old American (15 mins away) for your 36. Have to be a member or Westin guest to play Stonebriar Fazio. If you have a private club membership back home look at Thousand Greens which will give you private course connections here.

Drive 1hr 45 min to The Cliffs Golf resort at Possum Kingdom Lake. Amazing track.

Old American is a must if you like the architectural aspect of courses. Tribute is only fun if you know the holes and their significance. The next best is Cowboys Golf Club as far as public tracks go. Texas Star is also solid as well. The cliffs is different for sure and will be one of a kind. Drive back through Strawn on your way back and eat at Mary's Cafe for the best chicken fried steak in the state if you decide to take trek out to the cliffs.

I'm going to play Old American and Stonebriar on a Wednesday in late May. That leaves me with Tuesday afternoon open. Anybody play Pine Dunes recently? Is it worth the drive? Seems to be getting mixed reviews lately. Thanks.

You could drive down to Glen Rose. They have 36 holes which have always been is good shape when I've played there. Not expensive at all.

Yup, squaw valley. Two good tracks down there.

Nobody ever mentions Pecan Hollow on here. Probably the best greens in the metroplex and it's public. I played out there a few weeks ago and it was $31 to walk with a small bucket.

I just returned and wanted to thank those who helped me out. I played Stonebriar Fazio and Old American last week between tornados! Some crazy weather you have there. I enjoyed both courses and was happy I played them. Fazio course as expected is a resort course so it played a little easier and those self- centering fairways came in handy a few times. Everything in fine shape especially the soft cushy bunkers. I don't play on a lot of Bermuda greens so it took some getting used to and were a little slow but rolled true. Grain definitely matters. It was pretty windy so that made it a little tougher. Old American was a much tougher test and a fun layout. Definitely a shot makers course. Approach shots to sectioned off greens we're tough. I felt pin locations on some of the greens we're unfair. I don't have enough precision to always place it where it needs to be so I ended up with some longish putts. Some holes along the water were CPO and soft. Overall I really liked this course. These we're two worthwhile courses in my book. Thanks again.
