What games/betting do you typically run during group trips?

I go on a couple 8-16 man group trips every year and everyone always throws in like $100 for betting - skins, etc. I'm fine with the fact that full handicap strokes isn't really a fair way to do skins with a wide spread of handicaps, but one of the things I loathe are any kind of inter-group bets. We'll often do something like best 2 of 4 scores, but I don't care how honest you think all your friends are, there is always some stroke shaving. It's a $100 spread over a couple days, so the money isn't important, but it's irritating.

What games do you typically play on group trips like this?

we do mod stableford for the whole trip... top 25% of field paid for $100-$200 a man than a skins game per course we play for $50.... reward a trip of good play and reward a good round.. often times - it is not the same winner.

I like to structure the bets so that the gap between the bottom and the top is reasonable. We are on the trip to have fun; not to make money. I used to go with a group that had what I call a winner heavy betting structure. The player who played best would take home $1100 - 1200. The players who struggled all weak might only win $50 - 75. That gap is too large.

My structure is a team event plus skins and closest to the hole. Each round we have two on two and the payout is per hold won. So no "winner take all". At the end of the week, there is a winning team bonus.

For skins, we use full handicaps which might slightly favor higher handicaps. But our range is not that broad (5 - 11 indexes) so there is very little high capper advantage (I keep the stats and the low cappers are winning about 50%). That advantage is offset by CTP which obviously favors low cappers.

Our last trip was Wisconsin where the top winner took home $336 and the last place player took home $174.

You should never do inter-group bets for more than $5 for that very reason. Gimmes get longer when everybody in the foursome is on the same team and it's impossible to control. So my solution is to split the teams so that you never have an entire foursome on the same team and putts are not good until somebody on the other team says they are good.

I love the best 2 of 4 format and we play it every week, but for very small amounts.

We just did a trip to N. Myrtle/Calabash with 10 guys in 3 teams (3-3-4). We played best ball Thursday, total strokes with handicaps Friday, and Mod Stableford with handicaps Saturday. The HCPs ranged from 8-29. Friday and Saturday worked out well with only a 4-shot spread between first and last Friday (net) and a 6-point spread Saturday. The problem was Thursday - the 8 never made worse than bogey and his team killed the other two.

Please explain how you played best ball with 3-3-4. Was it one best ball out of three or four? If so, the four should have killed the threes.

Typically you rotate who "doesn't play" if your groups aren't even. First hole, play 4 sits, second hole player 3 sits, etc.
