Slope reading on Google Maps?

Is there Any way to get a true yardage reading on slopes? At ranges or courses from google maps? If so, how?

As in say you are looking up your range or course. you do not own a slope range finder and want to know the real yardages.

I doubt it. Unless you get access to military grade satellite maps, they aren’t accurate enough. Buy a range finder.

Either get a map that has elevations down to 1' and do the math, otherwise you need to buy a rangefinder with slope. You would be surprised at how much elevation change is really needed to make any difference in yardage.

How does one learn to do the calculations? I have looked it up before casually and could not find anything concrete. I know it it’s downhill and you are above the target then you do 1 club less. And if you are below the target then you do 1 club more.

The range I go to sometimes , it has some of its targets 20 feet below your feet, some 10 feet and then the furthest targets are level with you. It’s like you are hitting down a steep hill and then at about 175 yards a new hill starts going upwards again .

Trackman data shows landing angles between about 40 to 50 degrees for shots between 200 to 100 yards respectively, so an easy rule of thumb is assume 45 degrees which makes it a 1 yard distance change for each yard of elevation.

The math is likely fairly complicated (and more so since I'm a long time away from university) but it is really dependent on how the individual hits the ball. High ball hitter or a low ball hitter. High or low spin. You really have to figure out some yardages and elevation changes and chart what happens for you. It could be 1 club more for one person and 2 clubs more for the next guy because they hit it different.

The Leupold finders with slope try and calculate how much you need to compensate based on your baseline yardages. TMI for me. I usually take the straight yardage and figure out my own +/- based on my experience. I will look at the slope yardage if it is more than 5 yards, but that doesn't happen much.

It's much more complicated than that. There are two parts to evaluating uphill and downhill shots.

1. The actual up or down distance. The actual up or down distance can be much more (or less) than one club. It is less for highly lofted clubs than lower lofted clubs since high shots are dropping much more verticle than low lofted clubs. So a downhill wedge shot will be much less affected than an uphill 3-iron shot.

2. The slope of your lie. If you are hitting from a sloped lie, it will also increase or decrease the loft of your club.

So look at an uphill shot. If it's slightly uphill it may be one extra club. But if you also have an uphill lie it might be two extra clubs. Etc.
