SC DeTour Make over

I have been wanting to do this for some time. Finally found a reasonably priced Newport 2 Detour on eBay and went for it. It needed a bit of clean up. So I removed the old insert, did a bit of filing and sanding with a very fine grit 1X42 belt sander. Then installed a copper insert from Spry Evo. Paint fill is black, white and copper (Tamyia) and some black acrylic caulk around the insert. It could've used some more sanding, but I didn't want to spend too much time one it. Installed a black shaft. Was really debating about having it go to BOS for black oxide on the head (and better final finish). But really have a lot invested in it already. Do you think I should go back to a chrome shaft with the stainless steel head?

Afterwards, I went on a search for an appropriate head cover. So thought, why not copper? And to my surprise, the SC Club had a copper cover for 2003. Found one on eBay and paid way more than I wanted or should have, but you know this addiction!!! I think it’s a great combo!

What grip did you put on?

Black and white SS Midslim 2.0 counter core. Wish I had something else, but I like the SS MS 2.0 a lot. I used to love the Iomic Classics, might try one of them again. But I do still have the Evnroll ER 1.2. Will be hard for anything to knock it out of the bag.

I've thought about doing the same ... But was concerned about headweight. Any idea what it ended up being after you removed the rear part of the insert?

Head weight was not a concern, I actually used some a 10g tip weight and tungsten in the epoxy. Final weight was about 354g. Exactly what I like, 350-355. By the math it was going to be 340g with out the tip weight.

More than likely a collector, but really want to game it. I love the evnroll though.

I just did one with the insert from Spry Evo and the head was 341g after it was all said and done. I think they were originally 340ish so the weight should be the same after as it was before the mod.

My original head was 357g. The insert without screws was 80g (that includes the 30g Cameron weight. The copper insert was 67 g. So the net loss was about 13g. I added 10g of tip weights to the shaft to get it back to about 354g total.

Wow, great install. 340g is just perfect for many, and couple that with a soft metal like copper, it's a winner.

I game my putters at 33” so 350-355 is my number.

I'm venturing into this realm of Detour mods and am waiting on some copper bar stock to make my own insert. The original will have to do until then, and actually will be MY preference should I use the putter myself. Light heads/putters and SW are my Goldilocks zone right now. With the lighter headweight (302), I can leave the steel shaft in the build!

When you look at Scotty's long enough you'll discover subtle differences in all of his lines. I'm partial to the 'wide' cavity of the 009 and Tiger's NP2, and it's just something not offered OTR. The Tei's, Classics, Aop's, and Studio Stainless come close, but aren't it. Finally one that's closest and no flange line!

Nope, it's tricky to get it to look right though. Practice on something first, 1/8" should be good, 1/4" won't fit.

These heads are my favorites of his Newport 2s because of the crisp, sharp lines throughout the head. Most, if not all of his OTR Newport 2s have some hand shaping and softening of the corners and toplines. The Newport 2 Detour looks amazing at address. I'd love to find one in almost mint shape to throw a copper insert into.

Any .355 putter Shaft will work. I think mine came from putter lounge.

I’ve built quite a lot of these, actually it was a collaboration between myself and Charles at Spryevo that kicked off the copper insert production. By all accounts only 10000 detours were made, so we have got about 9800 to find!

He’s also working on an insert for the studio style too which will be amazing - a little like the new t22!

Interesting about the 10,000. Used ones are a bit high on eBay. A Studio Style would be cool. I have one that I refinished in black ox. Left the insert SS. Would love to try it for the extra weight.

Picked up a mint NP2 head and now need an insert!

From ugliest putter on the planet to pretty dang cool. That looks great!
