Ranking Tiger's 15 majors for awesomeness - and an absurd factoid

I guess people might prefer the fact a bigger name with Sergio was involved instead of DiMarco. Sergio's "no look" shot from the trees was an amazing moment and it was a heck of a battle between two young guys with a ton of talent.

But my point on that is Tiger screwed both of those guys. DiMarco would have 2 majors in very short period of time (2005 Masters, 2006 Open) if not for some miraculous golf by Tiger: the #16 chip-in and 7 birdies in a row at Augusta...phenomenal/insane iron play at Hoylake. If DiMarco wins those two majors, who knows where he goes. He probably builds a ton of confidence and wins future majors.

Likewise for Sergio. Tiger derailed Garcia's career before it really got started. If some other guy instead of Tiger was there in 1999 and Sergio won at age 19, he turns into a real force in golf...possibly with many major wins over the next 20 years. Instead he keeps coming up short and it takes him 18 years to finally win a major.

not to mention - removing those 3 majors from Tiger's total and disrupting his pace; those wins go different ways and all of their careers could be different. interesting to say the least.

As a Tiger golf talent appreciater, for me hands down the 2008 U.S. Open is the tournament out of all his tournaments I still think was his singular win from a pure story in sport. Not getting into all the broken leg or kind of but not really, blah blah blah. I simply cannot imagine with the pain he was so obviously in throughout the tourney, the extremes and unpredictability of its severity, how any high level professional golfer could figure out a way to win with all the pretty obvious physical and mental implications for one's golf game. I just think that's a WD before the tournament for 99% and during for 100% but not for him that week. How it got to where it was and all that for me doesn't play into it, I just look at the fact of what it was that week and still can't imagine anyone dealing with it at all, let alone winning and in a playoff.

It's almost like, "hey I really need these putts and you can take them away from me later if you want" and he got them and they were indeed taken away later.

Me too.

2008 first, then 2000 US Open, then 1997 Masters, then 2019 Masters

The shots are really what stand out to me from that event, not the injury stuff. 100 footer for eagle, miracle chip-in, and another 40 footer for eagle all within about a 6 hole stretch on the back nine Saturday. Then the 15 footer Sunday evening on the 72nd hole. Bumpy poa greens and it somehow goes in. Could have easily lipped out.

If any shot mentioned above turns out slightly different, Rocco wins in regulation. Tiger was extremely fortunate to win, especially when you realize it cost him the remaining half-season.

Hoylake was probably the most boring tournament in the history of golf. You are entirely correct, Tiger's dominance of that course was ridiculous, he hit like 1 driver the entire week (i think that is actually correct) and cut that course up like a surgeon.

But combining the usual TV blandness of a nondescript links course, with Tiger hitting 3 iron off every tee, 8 iron to the middle of a green.....it was like watching the recorded cam footage in the movie "speed" that they used to deceive Dennis Hopper. "oh he hit 3 iron again and it landed in the middle of the fairway, didn't i just see that?"

Im partial to the 2008 Torrey Pines Open (because)!

I live here and play there majority of the times and the course is flat out tough, even when they cut the rough.

The guy did it on a bummed out knees and back.

Had to hit that putt to get into the playoff with Rocco, miss and its trunk slamming.

Did security on Wednesday and was inside the ropes and was 15 feet from him and he nuked ball after ball, never hear that ball and club sound before.

He came back on Monday and won the event.

2005 Masters is a bit low, that was one of my favourite Masters. Obviously the chip in is most memorable but that was a real epic battle with DiMarco that went on for a few days. Tiger had a poor start as well, maybe the worst of a tournament he has won. Then he went on a serious birdie blitz through the field heading into the final day. Was edgy on the final day but that all added to the drama.

For me 1997 Masters is greater than the 2019 Masters because it combined Tiger announcing himself story and complete and absolute sporting excellence. That win changed golf forever, he was hitting sand wedges into par 5s. 2019 had the story but it won't change golf in the same way, Tiger just hung in and made fewer mistakes.

Soon as the eagle putt to take the lead dropped on 18, and the calm fist pump, Tiger looking towards the sun setting over the Pacific... you knew it was over. Iconic moment.

the 2008 US Open, simply because of the way it ended, the playoff and tiger's physical condition ... tiger has to birdie the final hole to make the playoff, then builds a 3 shot lead only to see it vanish and fall 1 behind by incredible play from rocco ...

Going to the absurd. Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2001, had 14 PGA tour wins, including 4 majors, and a Players. Rory McIlroy, most likely a lock for the Golf Hall of Fame, and arguably the best talent since Tiger, has 15 PGA PGA tour wins, including 4 majors, and a Players, IN HIS CAREER!!!

Not sure how many prior opportunities he really had, but the '19 Masters was his first major victory from behind. I get that he was so far ahead in so many others but he's also got quite a few Top 5's that weren't victories so he has been close but not leading many times before.

1997 Masters is even more absurd. +4 on the opening nine holes, on his way to missing the cut by a mile. Shoots -22 on the last 63 holes to win by 12 shots. That is an insane turnaround from how the tournament started for him.

Ok, so let's say TW is half as good now as in 2000 when he won 4 majors and 14 wins in 2 years.

He should make it his goal now to win 4 majors and 14 wins in the next 4 years.

Right?
