Games help

LokiLoki Members Posts: 1,110 ✭✭

Going on the annual spring golf trip in May. Usually we have two foursomes and play a scramble, but we are down to seven. What games can we play? We don't switch the foursomes so one group would always have one guy hitting twice, presumably on a rotating basis. Getting these guys to change is going to be a tough row to hoe. Any ideas will be appreciated. Playing individually is out because I am the only one with a handicap and the abilities are quite broad, think 9 to 36.

Is this one round only or multiple rounds?

The team with 3 rotates the “extra shot”. Guys are 1,2,3.

    First hole: 1,2,3,1 2nd shot 1,2,3,2, 3rd shot 1,2,3,3. Etc.

    2nd hole: 1,2,3,2, 2nd shot 1,2,3,3, 3rd shot 1,2,3,1 etc.

Just have them keep the same order and alternate who hits twice per shot.

Or 4 man team count best 3 out of 4 and 3 man team count best 2 out of three and second best score twice.

We will play at least 72 holes.

From best player (1) to worst (7). Players 1 to 5 play on the 4-man teams twice and the 3-man teams twice. Players 6 and 7 play on the 4-man teams three times and the 3-man teams once. I personally wouldn't go with a player hitting twice on the 3-man teams.

    1,4,6,7 vs. 2,3,5
    2,3,6,7 vs. 1,4,5
    1,4,5,6 vs. 2,3,7
    2,3,5,7 vs. 1,4,6

If there are more rounds then maybe the Callaway system for those - https://www.thoughtco.com/how-to-use-the-callaway-system-1564469

If he wants to stick with a scramble format, this is just about the only option available.

It's a nice advantage for the guy hitting two shots, especially putting. So make sure the person that is hitting two always goes first then last, never twice in a row.

To make it a little simpler you could have the 3 man team only get extra putts. So use the method Augster suggested but only for putting. That's what we usually do. That usually results in a more "fair" outcome then two shots for one person every shot. At least as "fair" as they can be in an uneven scramble. Like roadking said though, if sticking with a scramble you don't have many choices

If circumstances dictate that one guy playing two balls is not acceptable to the course (particularly in the case where maybe a single gets paired in), you could always alternate which player does NOT hit a shot in the foursome. Just a thought.
