Jack’s major record when leading

PTG1

Recommended Posts

Jack won 10 out 12 times he held the 54 hole lead in his career.

Tom Watson outplayed him 65-66 in the final round of the 1977 British Open.

His other loss was to Charles Coody in the 1971 Masters. He also started the day tied for the lead and beat Jack 70-72.

One other thing Jack and Tiger have in common is blowing a four shot lead after 36 holes. Tiger did it in the 2009 PGA and Jack did it in the 1981 Masters.

And not only that; they were paired together both final rounds. (I had a notion that they were paired for all 4 rounds but that appears to have been mistaken.) And -- this is astonishing -- Watson finished -12 after 72 holes for the win. Jack was a shot back at -11. And the third place finisher was Hubert Green at -1. They were ten shots clear of the field. For younger guys who are well acquainted with the career of Tiger Woods, imagine that at the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach, there was one other player in the field who had played stroke-for-stroke with Tiger while they lapped the field. That's how good the '77 Open Championship was. (Along with wonderful dry, sunny weather at Trurnberry on the weekend.)

Nicklaus came from behind in a final round to win a major on what -- 8 different occasions? And Tiger has never done that, right?

What?

Also, not sure what that has to do with anything being discussed.

Two bananas and a whole pig again.

So it was like Stenson and Phil at the 2016 Open. Only the Open was by a bigger margin.

Stenson/Mickelson had a similar situation. One of Phil's best performances ever and ran into a buzzsaw with Stenson. Very similar situation for Jack running into the Watson buzzsaw at Turnberry.

Just off the top of my head, Tiger was behind in the final round of both the 2000 PGA and the 2008 US Open. In both of them, he found himself in the clutchiest of clutch situations, needing to make a birdie on the final hole to tie. He did it, and also needed birdie to tie on the final hole of the 18-hole playoff at the 2008 US Open, and did that too. Ended up winning both playoffs.

The better question would be, "What's Jack's major winning percentage in his prime vs Tiger?" As in, how many majors were won vs events played?

One could even look at it In terms of each player's last major win. The Nicklaus crowd wouldn't like the results I surmise, and the even more impressive fact for Tiger is that he was barely functional in some of his appearances from 2011-2017.
