Grip size and Shaft size, what I thought I knew

Recommended Posts

So I posted a question on here yesterday basically asking about putting .580 grips on .600 shafts. Could it be done and what would the result be.

I want to apologize up front because I admit I was baiting everyone with that post, however I really just wanted to see if everyone else had thought the same way I did concerning this topic. I got a few responses and a fair number of views confirming what I always had been told and believed. Anyone on here who regrips clubs either professionally or for themselves, I would invite to check out this video I just put on youtube. Would love to here what you guys think.

Thanks.

Interesting! If you were to take this idea to the extreme then and continue to increase the butt diameter of the shaft then the grip would keep stretching/thinning up to a certain point without increasing in diameter as much or at all it seems. I suppose this also depends on the type of grip as well and how soft/hard the material is. The thinning you mentioned at the end could explain some of the perception difference though as a thinner group would likely feel harder, and thus maybe bigger to some people? Maybe not between a .580 and a .600 but perhaps up to some of the .635+ graphite shafts out there today.

Adam,

Great video, might have to do some more testing myself. On a side note: Try measuring the grip top to bottom rather than side to side and see if there is a difference, I have notice with some grips that where the 2 halves are attached/where the seam is a decent amount thinner. With some of the grips I have done on my own sets I have also noticed that the jump from .600 grip to .580 grip isn't exactly what I would have expected and hard to calculate so I have started making sure that i tape up all of my shaft to the same diameter and then grip using all the same core size grips, takes the variable out for me.

I agree. Had the same thought about increasing the shaft diameter (ie tape layers) to see how the grips reacts, linear or non-linear results. I used a Tour Velvet for this since it is still I believe the most popular grip in the game.

I will be working on a new video later today, unrelated, but I will go and take a top to bottom measurement while I am there and let everyone know.

Appreciate it. Had the name for the business as I do some club work for a college team and just decided it would be good to have some videos both that cover topics I was interested in, and wanted to give an online option for new clubbuilders getting into it. Took the club building class I used to teach at Golfsmith way back, and build it into an online tutorial. Please feel free to check out some other videos on the channel, and stay tuned as I have a new club review series I am working on that I think WRXs will hopefully like.

Where I believe you have a problem (an issue might be better) is that you actually stretched the .580 grip a little to make it the same length as the .600 grip. The grip not only has to stretch around the circumference, but also in the length. I would repeat the same experiment but blow the grips on with compressed air (using tape the same thickness as the 2-way tape). When you blow the grips on, they go on without stretching and if you do stretch them, a quick blast of air will allow the grip to "relax" to its normal state.

I understand what you are saying and they're maybe something to that. However, let me counter that argument with a thought I had.

I went back and watched my form when installing the grips and I use what I will call a back or right hand dominant method where the majority of the force is applied to the back end of the grip. This I know comes from my perpetual fear that I will leave a grip installed with the butt flapping around off the end which I have always believed is the biggest mess up you can do with grips. And I definitely don't want to do that on camera without an extra grip! When you install grips that way, you are actually applying a compression force to the grip as friction pushes back against you, resisting the grips movement down the shaft. I think it's unlikely that using this method, one could ever get much stretching of the grip down the shaft unless there was an overt act to stretch it. Thoughts?

I've found that depending on the grip, it doesn't take much force to stretch or compress a grip. Using digital calipers at various points on the grip length it became vary obvious that even a small amount made a difference in size. I often measure grips at several points down the length so that I get a truer indication of the overall size. I don't do much regripping these days (other than my own clubs), but back in the day when I could be doing 100's a day, I got to a point where after I've got the grip about 1/2 way on I was only pushing on the end cap with my thumb covering the vent hole. Done that way, you would literally get the grip to pop on the last little bit as the air/fluid pressure had nowhere to go but out the mouth of the grip. The grip was never stretched using this method and you always got true size without a rubbery butt.
