Swingweight issue

Thanks for any insight on the following:

Purchased a Wilson Cortex Driver with Atmos Blue 6 shaft on the BST. I cut an inch off the butt, reinstalled a normal grip, and added 12 grams of lead tape to the head. This is not my first time doing this, however, the swingweight now comes in at E0. I measured and remeasured everything. Any ideas as to what is going on? I have several other clubs that I have done this to and the swingweight is where it should be. I know I should have found the swingweight prior to modifying, but it’s never been an issue before. This $500 driver couldn’t have been built with a swingweight of E0, right? Shouldn’t the 12 grams of lead tape restored the swingweight back to original after the 1” cut?

Any assistance is appreciated.

The 2g per SW point only really applies to the mid iron. Shorter irons require a bit more, longer clubs require less. It's all based on how far the head is away from the fulcrum point. Chances are you ended up adding more weight than what was required.

Exactly.

Too much weight was added so remove some until you achieve the swingweight you want. And be sure to do all this with a swingweight scale, not one of those online swingweight calculators.

Cortex is known to swingweight very high in its stock configuration. I’ve heard in the high D range.

A SW point for a driver is about 1.6 grams. Given you said it’s E-0 now, I’d say if you took off ALL 12 grams of the tape it should be about D-2 to D-3. 7 point reduction is 7 X 1.6 = 11.2 grams.

Didn’t know that. Thank you

12 grams is too much weight to add at the start. First measure the club's swing-weight with no weight on the head, then add weight in increments until you get the swing weight you desire. Also, grips can have different weights. While most standard grips are in the 48-52 gram range, they can range from 30 - 60 grams. Also, do you have a preference is swing-weight for your driver? Most OEM drivers will come with a swing-weight of around D0. Try hitting your driver with no weight added to the head. If it feels too light, then add weight in 2 or 3 gram increments until it feels right.

Grip is 52 grams. Weighed it before installation. I do like the feel of D4 in my other driver and got the Cortex to D4 with 2 grams of weight added to head.

Thanks for all the responses
