Orange Whip for increasing speed

The speed stixs are based on the concept of alternating heavier and lighter weights and working with different levels of resistance. Orange whip only comes in one weight so don't expect to duplicate one with the other. There are some older threads on DIY speed stixs, you might try searching for them.

I believe for most it will. Maybe not for stronger faster guys . It will be great for flexibility, it will add in forearm strength , do it 20 times both ways and see what a workout it is. I actually like swinging it left handed to do what the speed sticks do . It will help with sequencing , transition, rotation. I got mine 2 months ago and along with the super speed workout I swing the whip.

There are people that say that a heavy training device (such as the orange whip, or similar) will actually slow down your swing. Then there are people that say that a heavy training device have made them speed up their swing and hit the ball farther. I personally do not think that these claims are contradictory.

Whippy weighted trainer (Orange Whip or similar) supposedly improves sequencing, tempo, and flexibility. For a golfer struggling with any combination of those (pretty much anyone who frequents this board likely is one of them), any improvement on those will likely result in a more efficient swing with a more consistent strike quality. For many, this would translate into a faster swing and more distance.

SuperSpeed (overspeed training) uses different weighted sticks to allow you to swing the club faster. This supposedly triggers a neurological response that enables your muscles to move faster. As such, when you swing a normal weighted club, you can swing it faster. This supposedly can help sequencing, tempo, and flexibility as well. However, if you simply just swung a stick that is significantly heavier than your normal clubs, then you are actually training your muscles to move slower.

From personal experience using both (well, not the orange whip, but the SKLZ knockoff of it), and doing some unscientific experiments by hitting balls before and after using them. I think they are both effective at hitting the ball farther. However, I feel any speed/distance gains from a whippy trainer are due to improved sequence and tempo. Distance gains from SuperSpeed are from sheer clubhead speed. Also, there is immediate improvement in hitting balls after swinging the whippy weighted trainer. However, after SuperSpeed, it takes me a few swings to hit the ball well again, but when I do get back into the groove, the balls are flying further. I need to stick with the SuperSpeed protocols a little longer, though, if that problem goes away.

While I haven't really yet experimented with using both devices in the same practice session, I'm going to start doing a warmup with a whippy weighted trainer before doing the SuperSpeed protocol. That would get my brain tuned to the correct tempo and sequencing, then I can build on that by focusing solely on speed.

I’ve been doing the Drive 400 program and using my SKLZ yellow whip (knockoff) as the club that I swing with the workout. I’ve been doing it pretty religiously for about 6 weeks now.

I can’t tell that I’ve gained a single MPH in clubhead speed. I’d say my normal drives go about the same distance as they always do. I have hit a few bombs since doing the program to places I’ve never gotten to on my course, but those felt more due to some combo of technical swing moves and puring the shot like I haven’t before, vs being due to any increase in club speed from strength etc training.

And by the way, I’m not knocking the Drive 400 program. I love it actually. My back no longer hurts if I go after a shot, and I’m getting stronger, and I have a workout to follow that theoretically helps me get better at golf. I highly recommend it. But for me personally, I just haven’t seen any sustainable swing speed improvements from it or the Orange Whip ilk.
