Left knee in the backswing

Recommended Posts

I like out to the toes and rotation takes it a bit inward.

very educational. I'm just coming back from a several year break and my issue has always been over rotation of the hips in the backswing. Since I've come back I've been focusing on putting pressure into my right hip and my left knee moving forward slightly(allowing it to) as opposed to letting it turn towards my Right knee as much. I've found I'm hitting it better and further with less effort than I did before I quit. just wanted to make sure I was on the right track.

Good illustration from dans guy.

Backswing-right hip moves more and left hip less

Downswing-left hip moves more, right hip less

Most do the opposite.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

This was a major epiphany for me from viewing Monte's new Efficient Swing series. At first I puzzled over how that was even possible, but I soon realized that I was making an invalid assumption. I had always assumed that the hip rotation both in the backswing and the downswing was around a common point of rotation pretty much in the center of the pelvis. This simple description by Monte (accompanied by the video illustration) made it clear that the backswing hip rotation is around an axis near the left hip bone, while the downswing rotation is around another axis near the right hip bone (after it has rotated up and back and then shifted in transition). That's how one hip that's further away from the center of rotation moves more than the other hip which is closer. And the actual points of rotation aren't that important to think about, but the idea that the rotations are not symmetric and static has completely transformed my concept of how the hips are supposed to work.

I feel like I have something good to work on now. My main issue has always been over rotation of the hips. Monte and Dan told me that years ago. My thoughts right now are keep the left hip still on the backswing and keep the right hip still on the downswing. Hitting seven iron it seems to make the transition kind of automatic.

Yeah, I have definitely been doing this wrong. I have been firing my right hip to start my downswing, looks like it needs to be my left. Now the drop the basket drill makes sense...

It might be worth thinking in terms of where you’re shifting your pressure rather than firing the hips. This is coming from a hip firer

This was me for a long long time. I think the culprit was myself. Once I got the feel and spent some time working on it the problem went away. It was just one of those things where I told myself “don’t do that”

I also didn’t understand how the pivot worked. Gaining a better understanding of getting the right hip deeper in my backswing was also helpful regarding the left knee.

TryAgainPls writes: For me that happens when my **hips over rotate** improperly in the backswing.

So what's the tipping point between getting the right hip deeper and over rotation?

The angle they rotate on. Flat is going to lead to over rotation. Lead hip down trail hip up is what you want.

What @jut111 said. In the backswing, for a right hander, the right leg will straighten out (lose flex) some and the left leg will bend more (gain flex). I kind of have the feeling that my right hip works up, around and towards the target if that makes sense. @glk posted a video done by athletic motion golf that is a great illustration.

I agree with everyone's praise of the AMG video....pure gold.

For me the take home messages that on the backswing the right hip does most of the rotation....

Do a goggle search for: manzella BBKIB. A guy called Art Maffei was a rocket scientist at NASA whose job it was to get unstable rockets stable (i.e. when pitch, yaw and roll are out of control). When he retired he became a 'garage' golf swing theorist. He drew upon his scientific expertise and his own observations to propose the Bumpy Back Keep it Back (BBKIB) 'theory'. Bumpy translates as butt. BBKIB means get the right hip back on the backswing, keep it there on the downswing as the left hip opens up. Mike Granato (one half of the AMG team) would have been part of those conversations.
