Best book/ video to learn swing basics

Recommended Posts

Monte's Drive 4 Dough is more of a "from the ground up" IMO if OP is looking for starting with basics and building from there. Recommend highly as a clear, well communicated and modern approach.

A pretty good all in one "old style" book for which you can also get DVDs is Watson's book if you are looking for something you can sit down and read and look at photographs. It's one of the best of those kinds of books and his DVDs are well done. I bought some grips for my wife a few years ago and got free Butch Harmon's instructional DVDs - looked at them a couple times back then, they weren't bad. Again, kind of "old school".

I just recently joined athleticmotiongolf and their video content is some of the best I've seen. I really like that they include 3d aspects to the swing. It really is a whole new understanding to the golf swing as what good players are actually doing is seen in every aspect. I also have every one of Monte's videos except the new one and also highly recommend D4D. As far as reading content I really love Kelvin Miyahira's articles. They provide good old school 2d analysis as to what elite players are doing. Good luck.

If you can afford it go and see a pro. Tell him what you are un happy with and what you are happy with. Do not randomly follow/watch youtube videos unless you know specifically what you want to do - they will ruin your game.

If you cant afford/find a pro, then meandmygolf have good series on the basics (on there website). As for books Nick Faldo's a swing for life is terrific, as is Nick Bradley's Seven Laws of the golf swing. Both are a little old but the information is excellent.

It's both a bit dated and somewhat problematic (I know), but I still think that Hogan's Five Lessons is a great introduction to swing mechanics.

You know I have found teachers tell you what to do, but really are short in the explanations. Have you noticed that?

"We're trying this move where you extend your hip". "Extend that hip"

And you as a student are like "why am I extending my hip?"

A good golf book with the fundamentals can explain the why's.

Yeah baby!!! I love that clip!

I bought a very rare dvd from England he does on sand play. Look out for one for yourself!

I have yet to have time to watch it.

it's a good one. i just feel like he could have added more on how to keep the club stable. Other than that..almost genius. Needs a little physics 101..would have helped him. Great vid on the clubhead weight application

He was the designated bunker coach at the last British open. Remember the cameras in the sand? showing the player hitting the ball and sand towards it.

He has reached genius level for me. Once one of your players wins multiple majors , you are a genius, your teachings beat all the other teachings for a period of time. You are the cutting edge. As of now, he isn't of course. Molinari's coaches are the cutting edge.

What is your favorite book? Do you this his teachings are still applicable to the newer swings? I only have "art of the swing" because he went on On the Mark podcast and said it was rare. I was hoping I can integrate the teachings, it's a little hard to read because of the now defunct Microsoft scannable videos.

I really love any video that acts as a reminder that the golf swing is a fluid, ATHLETIC motion and not a series of discrete checkpoints. I get lost in my own head when I start thinking about "positions". This video is an excellent example. Really, any video that emphasizes feeling the weight of the clubhead usually "resets" my body.

For a more modern take on the concept, especially for a beginner, Erika Larkin's book "A True Swing" and her accompanying videos are pretty great. She posts a ton of excellent little drills to her Instagram feed, too.

Cowen is an incredible coach, BUT I’ll take Monte’s sand technique over Pete’s every day. I have the dvds of Pete’s and his explanation of his bunker shot technique is tortuous, lines here and there, etc. I’m sure if I had loads and loads of talent and hours a day to practice it would work. I’d rather get into a good setup and “just make a golf swing” and Monte’s ideas allow that thought (if I remember to release coming through). ;-)

Actually I hated it too. You really tossed it?

And I mean if you want to be just ok at bunker shots then don’t listen to the master ;). Haha

Atm I use Martin Hall’s bunker techniques. Pretty simple.

It got recycled, but same difference. Local library won’t take used books any more, no place close to donate.

Throw it on eBay or bst! trade it for something :). Isn't it $30 retail? But I know where you are coming from. Who's got the time.
