Nippon tour modus 105 in Z585 irons

I recenlty picked up a new set of Z585 irons on eBay, the have stiff nippon tour modus 105 shafts. My 7 iron swing speed is 75-80 MPH. I've noticed a loss of distance with this shaft, do they play stiffer then a PING AWT shaft? Coming from a PING G iron and the loss of distance is alarming, flush strikes lower peak height and less distance. Thanks!

Were the G irons power spec loft? That could make a difference. How many yards difference are you seeing? How far did you hit each 7 iron?

Standard loft on the G iron, according to the specs they are .50* difference Srixon being weaker. I hit the G 155, currenlty hitting the Srixon 140

Was the AWT also a stiff flex?

For me the Modus 105 flies quite a bit higher and I pick up a touch more SS in the short irons when compared to the AWT.

At any rate I would not think there should be a loss of 15 yards just from the shaft and a D0-D2 swingweight change. Have you checked to make sure the irons you got from ebay are "authentic".

Yes, and also check them on a loft and lie contraption.

For what it's worth, I started with the Modus 105 in regular with some 565's, and recently reshafted with 950 GH. Haven't hit them outside yet.

The above grid shows the comparative specs on the three shafts you mention. Not a whole lot of different in weight, launch and spin. I would say this may be a case that Shaft A and Head A perform differently than Shaft B and Head B, even though the shafts are from neighboring performance zones.

Also, the iron models themselves occupy different categories. The Ping G is a solid but benevolent GI iron, while the Z585 is ranked as a Players Distance iron. The Ping G head is simply friendlier for getting the ball into the air - you mention your "waaay lower" problem. And, adequate height is necessary for maximizing useful distance.

Good to hear you found a decent eBay source. But, you are sharing the experience of many golfers who go the "buy before try" route for golf clubs. Unless you get lucky, you can spend a season trying this-and-that iron model before finding one that really works for you. Testing irons on a launch monitor can eliminate a lot of early guesswork.

I tap eBay on occasion, but I used it to get a Lob Wedge that matches a Sand Wedge I like, or to pick up a Cobra 3H which matches the 4H I had, or to get a 4W for my backup bag - a 4W I had tested but not bought a few years earlier.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Wedges*:  Calla MD3: 48°... MD4: 54°, 58° ||  PutterΨSeeMore FGP + SuperStroke 1.0PT, 33" shaft

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour / 2. Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

     Ψ  Backups:

  • Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip |
  • Slotline Inertial SL-583F w/ SuperStroke 2.MidSlim (50 gr. weight removed) |

Pretty much every review I’ve read says the z585 is a game improvement club, that being said they didn’t score well on the Maltby playability score. I’m really enjoying the look and feel from this set. Hoping it’ll turnaround, if not I’ll trade for the G410’s

Did you find the Z585 to be easier to play then the i500? How does the distance compare?

Z585's are way easier to hit. No real big drop off in distance compared to the i500's, when purely struck the i500 goes further. But...., when not hit great it loses distance compared to the 585's. Z585's in my opinion are just as long, higher launching, more forgiving and the distance control is much better than the 500's. Feel, there is no comparison, Z585's feel amazing.

I find that the Modus 105 S plays stiffer (I have them in my JPX919 Forged) than my AWT stiff in my i210's.
