Favorite 5 Wood?

ejl_28

Recommended Posts

Saw some older threads on this but looking for some newer suggestions/thoughts. Looking to swap the 17* hybrid for a 5 wood. Whats everyones favorite head/shaft pairing they're playing or have played? Obviously this is different for everyone based on fit but I'm just looking for general experience with them. Thanks!

After spending a few weeks with the Cobra F9 with the Atmos blue tour spec 7S, I've ended up putting the Epic Flash in the bag. I'm around 100-103 driver swing speed but very smooth tempo and have always just preferred the good ole stock stiff shafts from most manufacturer's. Put me into something significantly stiffer and my ability to find the center of the club face goes way down. After not making it work with the F9 I went and spent about 75 minutes on the GG simulator with the EF, M6, G410 and another F9 and the callaway with the 65 gram Even Flow green shaft just really won me over for quality of contact. I think the shaft weight and bend profile (loads nice and easy) along with the higher SW (D2) allowed me to feel the head a lot more during the swing. I wish I didn't have this problem but I feel like I can save quite a few shots when I'm out of position on the downswing with some hand manipulation. Not meaning I can take a poor swing and turn it into a perfect shot but I can take a poor swing and salvage something playable out of it. I really like Ping irons but hated the G410 fairways. D0 swing weight... ugh. Squished shallow face... ugh. The Epic Flash's are loooong too.

M3 lofted to 19.75 with Aldila Rogue Black 80x. One of the smaller CC 5 wood heads on the market and sits very open, even lofted up one click. It almost plays as a combo hybrid/fw combining the benefits of both.

I love the head shape and sole but every one I have seen sits very closed. 2nd Swing is close by and they at times have a large selection of V Steels and they all sit closed to my eye.

I like my aero burner performance wise, its just sits a little closed and has an odd sound to my ear. V-Steel would be my suggestion of favorite to hit. Nice blend of feel and performance.

Man, this newish fairway wood tech is creating massive rocket launchers that are more controllable and just are game changers. They are long.

Some of my favorites that have stayed in the bag for a while over the years:

Adams Super LS

Taylormade SLDR

Mizuno MP650

Nike SQ2

Titleist 915 FD

Common thread with those was a nice face depth that is usable off the tee and they all have penetrating, low-ish spin flight for a lofted wood.

I hit my buddies ^^ the other day with stock stiff shaft and it was so easy. Balance felt perfect for me and the face is nice and shallow just how I like it. The only other club I've held and immediately knew the balance was perfect and I was gonna hit it great was a Ping G25 hybrid with stock TFC 189h stiff. I wish I could match that balanced feel with everything in my bag

I still play a VSteel with an s300, and I can see the closed face opinion, but my personal favorite feature is what seems to be a more aggressive leading edge than what i'm used to seeing nowadays, gives a lot of confidence as to what you can do out of different lies. Other options, anything from the last couple models from Cobra, baffler rails on the bottom give the same feel of versatility.

Another vote for v-steel. Love the small footprint and crazy easy off the deck. I don’t have any issue with it going left... and I hit everything left. Not sure it’s just perfectly balanced for me off the rack, but it is the most consistent club in my bag.

F6 Baffler

You can't go wrong with either one.

As for shafts, I use lower launch shafts, so Hzrdus, Tour Green, Whiteboard are my go to shafts.

Cobra F6 Baffler is a great option. I have mine with a Nunchuk in it, and it's very easy to elevate. I actually play it as my 4 wood, but when testing it out at different lofts, anything in the 17.5*-19* setting gives a great ball flight. I really like the compact look to it, and even at 16*, it's plenty forgiving.
