Until AFTER Sophomore year. Camps and some other activities will circumvent this a bit but I think the overall goal will be met. You’ll see fewer young players committing. I’m not real sure how but I’m guessing you will still see the truly elite kids commit at ridiculously young ages.

It’s a complicated issue...especially for men’s coaches. They have to manage partial scholarships and part of the way they do that is through very early commitments to certain scholarship allotments. But they’ll adjust. I think all in all it’s a good idea. We’ll see how it plays out

Yes I meant junior year I thought I read there is a opening at the end of the sophomore year.

I know camps still exist but I also think it not fair that kids can’t even talk about the possibility or being recruited down the road and get feedback.

Why? Same rules for all....why is that unfair?

I get the part about not being able to commit or the coach making any promises. I think that is a good step forward and probably needed. Having said that doing unofficial visits or calling a coach and talking to a coach can be invaluable for both sides. I guess it really will depends how the new rules play themselves out.

The Part that confuses me is "No “communication with a coach” until June 15 of sophomore year." Does this mean June 15th after your freshman year and you have been promoted or does it mean June 15th between your sophomore and junior year?

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Yes that confused me until I read it few more times. It appears that is indeed after sophomore year so basically the summer before being a junior. It also includes kids who already committed. I hate to be those parents and not sure they can count on any verbal commitments at this point.

Camps have different rules. Coaches can be at the camps even if the PSA is a freshman or sophomore but there can be no recruiting conversations. This is the only time a coach should ever have face to face with a PSA prior to June 15th of their sophomore year (the summer prior to becoming a HS junior). Many of the new dates are earlier than they had been in the past with the exception of communication with coaches which is strictly forbidden until that June 15th date of the child's sophomore year.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

A verbal commitment means nothing.

We know a family whose daughter was verbally committed to Miami, at the time, since her sophomore year. When she went to sign they pulled the offer. She now is playing for another school in the state.

When I was a junior golfer the rule was summer after your junior year. Many of the dates have been moved younger. This will have a positive effect on junior golf and help having better athletes and less requirement for early specialization. I think the new rules are a step in the right direction and makes things a more level playing field for smaller schools

I think this will make High School golf more pertinent.

I could see where is makes it more relevant but that will only happen if coaches attend them.

No matter what I have a feeling we will start to see coaches Traveling to a wider variety of tournaments.

I don’t think anything prevents them from hanging out at junior tournaments and watching. This means smaller and regional tournaments where you never see coaches may be a good place to be seen especially where younger kids may see them recruiting older players. In a lot cases high school tournaments are an ideal setting you have older kids but freshman playing as well with coaches you can talk to about potential recruits. I know they may already be at some these events but I am talking about D1 schools higher up in the food chain who would have never even visited in the past.
