Lost all distance with iron

Recommended Posts

I am pretty much at a loss. I play (well I did a month ago) to a 2 handicap. I have always hit a nice high draw with all clubs and been longer than most with my irons (150 yd pitching wedge - 200 + yd. 6 iron for example). When the season started I hit the ball better than I have in my life, was pureing everything. Over the past couple months or so something has changed, I can't seem to hit the ball solid at all (no compression). When I was hitting the ball well, my divots typically went slightly right of target. All of a sudden my divots are going left of target and I have lost significant yardage with my irons. My miss used to be a low hook, but now my miss it high, right and weak. It is to the point where I am coming up 2-3 clubs short on a regular basis. I just can't seem to compress the ball lately. I have literally lost 20 yards with every club, even my wedges. I did notice I seem to have lost all my lag. Not sure why this has happened.

I would pay a good amount of money for a solution image/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Below are links to my swings with an 8 iron from last weekend (I wish I had a few from earlier this year, but don't)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

in the top video it looks to me like your shoulders are aligned a tad left of your target line. Also, and this is hard to know because we don't see your swing when you are hitting it well, but you might be swinging with more arms and less shoulder turn than your regular swing. You are a big shouldered, strong guy, so maybe you don't normally turn your shoulders more than what these videos show, but I'd start with a check on shoulder alignment, and make sure you are turning your shoulders as much as you normally do when striking it well.

If, as Hit em true suggests, you are catching it a tad fat, as you check your shoulder alignment, make sure ball position is correct. Letting the ball creep forward and letting your shoulder alignment creep open are two faults, that in IMO go together and can result in less "smash factor" as the launch monitor guys like to say.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Tough to tell from DTL as I think the camera is in the wrong place. To my untrained I eye it looks like you’re aligned right of target.

Backswing looks like you whip the club head inside early and the clubface gets very open. On the way down the only thing you can do to not hit way right is to flip at the ball and present an overly weak but square clubface.

I might be completely wrong but that’s what I think I’m seeing. Solving it won’t be easy but it’s doable. I would guess the root cause is trying to become more of a drawer of the ball.

I agree it's tough to tell, and you may be correct, but to me it looks as if his hips and knees and feet are pointing toward what I guess is the target, but his shoulders look, to me, like they are aligned with that tree that is growing out of his neck, and which I assume to be left of the target.

Golfinbanker, you might do well to get a trained professional in person on this. Whatever it is, I bet it isn't a huge adjustment.

Both shots you hit fat. As lodestone mentioned, your alignment is off, and likely your ball position. Go to the range, get an alignment stick or a club on the ground and align your lower body to that stick. Then get a trustworthy friend to align a club along your shoulders parallel to the stick on the ground. It’s going to feel like your shoulders are pointed way right, but in reality they will be square to your target (or if you’re trying to hit a draw, square to where you want the shot to start). As for ball position, it might be drifting a bit forward, but it’s hard to tell. Experiment with ball position once you’ve nailed in your alignment.

If you hit that high draw with your current alignment, you’d either hit it 20 yards left of the target or you’d need to hit a big push draw to hit target.

Yeah looks like your shoulders are aligned to the left while you are slightly closed with your feet. Your lower body looks like it's stalling a bit because you dont' want to hit it even further left. Partially causing you to hit it fat slightly. The divot should be past the ball not slightly before it, clearly, but that's what is happening. I think seeing a pro would fix you up really quickly. As a golfer of your caliber you should be able to get your divot after the ball for better consistency.
