Bizarre day

I had one of those days today where everything felt wrong. Shot a 76 last Friday, pured pretty much everything. Today I hit 4 semi-decent drives, several slices (which I very rarely do), three duffs off the tee (which I never do), couldn’t hit my irons straight at all and everything to the right and very very short. Just utter rubbish throughout, like I’d never played before.

The stupid thing is my very short game was better than ever, and also didn’t 3-putt once, saved me from a horrible score and ended up on 12 over after 17, at which point I had to run off to pick my son up from school.

How does this happen? Obviously got army rather than torso, but why? I went to the range yesterday, hit 120 drives with two different clubs and had no problems. Today couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a tennis racquet.

Stupid bloody game.

Stupid bloody game, indeed.

You summed up some of my experiences nicely. I have rounds everyone once in a while where I think to myself "If I had played with a stranger today they'd have thought I've never played the game before."

Happens to everyone sooner or later. Late last year I had a round where nearly all my iron shots were fat. I was so frustrated I nearly walked off the course, but I forced myself to finish the round. My next round a couple days later, everything was fine. I couldn't hit a fat shot if I tried.

It’s golf. It happens every week on the PGA tour. Somebody will shoot 68 one day, 78 the next. Knowing this, I find it _bizarre_ that less-skilled players think it’s all that _bizarre_ that it can happen to us.

This isn’t meant to demean anyone’s perception of a bad day, only to put it into perspective.

And I do agree, it is a stupid bloody game. ?

What was bizarre was that I couldn’t hit a ball properly, not just slightly off, way off.

same happened to me yesterday, been playing the best rounds i have ever played everything low 80s or better, couldn’t get in the fairway to save my life hitting everything right at one point i aimee extremely left still went right. 3,5,6 iron also went right. the rest of the irons were fine putting was atrocious.

hit 2 good drives on holes 16 and 17, on the 16th tee,my father and i were just chatting as i finished a smoke, and from the other fairway one knuckle head goes, the green is clear you can hit(460 yard par 4) i said over hey thanks didn’t wanna hurt anyone. the way the course is set up he was on hole 4! anyway hit a nice drive almost 300 to where it stopped. and a nice 8 iron in. followed by a 3 putt! nailed another one down on the next hole. happy to have ended on a good note with the drives shall see what happens tuesday.

When you're tired, the small muscles ( arms, hands ) tend to take over rather than the big muscles (core). It's the nature's way of protecting you from getting potential injury.

When that happens, slowing down a little and take more club for the distance if necessary.

I believe Jack Nicklaus said it once that he had won more than half of his winning titles without his A game. Do the best with what you have that day instead of trying to force it happen.

Inobvious fatigue.

I had a similar day on my own scale the other day. Had been playing well of late, but this particular occasion, barely kept it in the park all day.

Realized post mortem that although I didn't feel too tired, it had been a long week, started a new exercise routine, and I was playing exhausted. Felt it the next day.

I think golf is different than most other sports in this regard. When you are slightly off in golf, because the margin between a good shot and bad shot is so thin, it can make you look like a complete moron. I’ve had those days, too, where a stranger would have wondered if I had ever played the game.

But take basketball or tennis for example. I used to play a lot of basketball. There were days when I was hot, and days where I wasn’t. But on the days that I was a little off, I still had other ways to affect the game and to get the ball in the basket. And my shot didn’t look any different than the good ones...they just didn’t go in. Sure, a stranger might have concluded that I wasn’t the best shooter on those days but my overall basketball talent would have been obvious.

And tennis...my wife plays a ton of tennis. She comes home and complains sometimes about bad days. I play with her occasionally, and at one point I wasn’t too shabby and I used to beat her all the time if I tried. Now, she kills me because she has just gotten so much better. But I play about twice a year, and I look pretty much the same each time I play. Yes, on some days I give her a run for her money and on some days it’s not close. I can tell when my shots are feeling better and when they aren’t. But again, to a stranger I wouldn’t look that different on my good vs bad days. I try to explain this difference in golf vs tennis to my wife, and she doesn’t understand me. But I can still find the face of the racquet on bad days, and maybe my shots are just outside the lines rather than in. But I don’t look like a moron out there (at least I don’t feel like a moron).

I truly believe that we all have variability in our performance for any sport, but that for golf, because the margin between good and bad is so razor thin, the variability leads to a greater dispersion in outcomes even to the point of hitting completely useless shots like divots 6 inches behind the ball or waaaay left or cold tops, etc. And those things get in your head, too, and create even more opportunity for bad shots. You see tennis players hit it on the frame occasionally, but they lose the point and they move on. Not in golf. That’s two strokes and it may be your new normal for that day...

It’s basically the same as Sergio’s.

Weight on right heel in the backswing, backswing slightly shorter than over the top, transfer weight and follow through, mindful of not trying to go too fast.

Do it twice, set up and whack.
