Side spin on chips

Recommended Posts

I’ve always enjoyed opening the clubface a lot or a little on both chips and pitches, though i don’t need to. I know that will have a tendency to impart a cut spin. But even with a closed face I always get a rightward kick on chips and pitches - high, low or otherwise.

So is that just a natural result? Will all chips inherently have some side spin or is it an issue with my path? Haven’t had much luck with exaggerating a “draw”.

Thanks for any wisdom.

I’m kind of curious on this too. Dan, in your short game instruction do you teach a pretty neutral path? Over the past 12 months I feel like my short game has improved a lot but I get the feeling if I was on a launch monitor that my path would be left for sure.

Not sure if that matters at all.

Yea pretty neutral path. And face angle isn’t 2D so handle height matters a lot too

are you sure the ball isn't just pushed slightly due to the open face and the rolling right isn't just an optical illusion? If the ball starts right of your intended line but rolls straight along its start line it will look like it's rolling a little right from where you are standing.

Not so much on chips, but I hit a lot of longer pitches that fly straight, land, and move hard right. Club face is always a little open on these shots.

I feel like I play pitches with a bit of an open face, sometimes square. But a lot of my shots have a little spin to the left because of my path. Sometimes they have some spin to the right, but that's closer to the green on more of a higher spin chip.

It always goes back to the same rules. If you are getting cut spin, the face is open to the path. If you are getting draw spin, face is closed to path. Hitting chips with different spin is fun. Want a little more check or bounce right, more cut spin. If you want the ball to roll out more or bounce left, more draw spin.

I started really experimenting more with spin after I saw Tiger in early 2000s hit an awesome draw spin chip. Pin was tucked on the far left with a bunker front left. Green was sloping left to right as well. On top of that, he couldn't take a direct line at the pin, so he put a ton of draw spin on the chip so when the ball hit the green it bounced significantly left and rolled out to the pin. There is no way to get that chip close any other way.

Well then, I guess it’s back to the chipping green for some more work today. Hadn’t really considered draw spin on a chip/pitch. Although, “bouncing right” does sound like a recipe for bringing the hosel into play. ?‍♂️
