Ping Shaft Question

I recently went in for a driver fitting, however based on that fitting my current set up (Ping G20, with the stock TFC 169D Stiff shaft) provided me with the best numbers. I was a bit shocked seeing as this club is now 8 years old. I'm wondering if it is possible that I'm leaving any distance on the table using a driver head from 2011-2012. Would be possible to use my current shaft with a newer model head? Trying to think of the best way to go about this- maybe buying a used shaft and head separately (that way I can still go back to my current as-is driver if the experiment doesn't work). I'm not even sure if this is possible, so I guess I could try to find a shaft with same characteristics and go that route if it isn't possible. Thanks for any input / suggestions.

While this is a little surprising, it certainly happens. I would bet that you are so comfortable with the G20 that you hit the center of the club face quite often. It has been my experience that the newer clubs are better on mis hits. I have a friend that has the same "issue" as you. He is very consistent and his older Ping driver gives him really good numbers, and the newer equipment ends up being pretty much the same. Do some experimenting with impact tape / foot spray to see if you are indeed hitting the center of the face - if yes, don't spend the money unless you want shiny and new! Good Luck!

Sounds like you may be intent on spending money even though it may not produce better results than your current setup. Its quite possible that your G20 still matches the performance of newer drivers. I have a Rapture V2 which is even older and still keeps up with most of the new stuff. I wouldn't pull the shaft on the G20, don't tinker with something that's working for you. Nothing wrong with buying a new driver after 9 years, treat yourself but hang on to the G20, its not worth much on trade or resale anyways.

Who did your fitting? If it was a big box store I might question the results and fine someone better qualified.

Yep - I have some "leisure" money that I get to spend through work that expires soon - we can use it on golf clubs/parts, so I do not mind spending money. I was fit by a highly regarded club fitter in my area, so not big box. Annoying to pay $100 to be told you are in your correct set up, but better than $100+$500 i guess haha.

Using my G30 shaft in my G400. Didn't like the stock shaft or any of the upgrades over the old shaft. Buy an adaptor and put in your old shaft. You can still order those old shafts from Ping on an adaptor for the new heads and they are dirt cheap.

Send it to Continental for a face-lift and you'll feel like you are playing a whole new club!
