The Dreaded Chicken Wing

So I've got a problem with coming over the top (and/or "chicken wing") and am working on correcting that (among other things). The biggest thing I learned from coaching kids is that the trick is to explain something 100 ways if necessary until you come up with the one that clicks. That said, I'm looking for a swing though to make my swing more inside-out.

So far the thing that seems to work best is to think about rather than think like I'm aiming to hit the back of the ball, to focus on the back back corner and swing like I'm trying to hit from there through the right front (perspective from behind the ball looking at the target). What other things can I try to improve my swing path?

Some of the things I've tried that didn't work so well for me was the towel under the arm and thinking "head behind the ball". I've had lukewarm results in thinking about dropping my hands straight down as my first move.

I'm in the same boat as you, and have been for years. I've been able to make a few modifications over the years that were helpful but none have fully fixed this issue for me. The dropping the hands as the first move is one I've tried but never have been able to have any success with. For whatever reason, I just can't maintain any semblance of a workable sequence to my downswing when I try it. I want to be able to do it - I just can't make it work. When I watch down-the-line video of players with good swings, that's what I see: the hands have started down while the shoulders are still fully turned and the back is still facing the target. Then, as the hands progress further down, everything uncoils in sequence. I can't do it though. In my move from the top, everything from the ground through the core to the arms and shoulders releases in one single move and it ends up pushing me through impact on an out-to-in path. I'll keep working on it, but at this point confidence in a cure is not high. If I haven't been able to fix it yet I'm resigned to the fact that at this point I may never get there. Guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks after all. Good luck - let me know if you figure it out.

It's helpful to allow the club to work as it's designed to work. Try slowly swinging a club with your left hand and arm. Watch what the club face is doing and notice the motion of your left forearm. The swing is not a left arm directed motion, this is just an exercise in awareness.

Post a video. Advice without seeing the swing is useless.

If the chicken wing is at the top of the back swing, (RH) think about facing the right palm more at the sky at the top. If on the follow through, think about getting the left palm more at the sky at the end of the swing, or, keeping the elbows a little closer together thought throughout the swing. The elbows thought will help both positions and also help impact. This works for me.
