Building a set of irons for my dad. Need suggestions!

Hi, let me first of say if this is the wrong forum please delete, still trying to get use to the new update.

Little back story is my dad used to be a scratch golfer and with life and shoulder injuries he doesn’t play much anymore. He does have a typical baseball swing and now fights a pretty good slice.

He wants to get back into the game and I want to build him an iron set for his birthday. Any suggestions on irons and shafts would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If he needs help with consistency and can't play/practice as much anymore, he may be a good candidate to try single-length irons. You could build a nice set of Pinhawk SL's with graphite shafts for about $150-$200 if you can find the heads in stock.

If it's a birthday gift, I would definitely go with a name he will recognize. Ping would probably be the one that he would appreciate the most.

Any of the G series would work well. Buy the newest model you can find.

Ping's stock AWT 2.0 shafts are nice. Nippon 950's or 980's are really nice, if you are looking for lighter steel.

He’s retired now so hopefully it will get back into it and practice. I would save his drive swing speed would be anywhere from 85-90mph. I don’t know if he can handle stiff shafts anymore. Maybe a regular or something

Gotcha... wasn't sure how much the shoulder injuries would factor into his ability to practice/play, and whether he needed shafts that would absorb some of the impact.

Not trying to sell you them, but I have some maltby tour ke4+ irons. Super nice looking and forgiving.

Giving the age, you could consider graphite shafts.

+1 for any G series starting from G25, with a special preference to G400 or even 410 if money is not a driver.

If money is not an issue how about a gift certificate to one of the major golf outlets in your area for a set of clubs and a fitting.

While I am an avid hobbyist clubbuilder, not sure why anyone would do that anymore if you don't have an addiction like me. The cost of a real nice OEM used set is comparable to a component build these days. And if you want shiny new, you cannot beat the Golfworks iron set Paks with free assembly that are half of new OEM prices.

Older set of Ping G somethings if he needs more help, or a set of I5's that are bullet proof. No needing ferrules with that set and will last longer than you.

Cant get a set easier than the Cleveland launcher irons. They aren't good for the go but with his injuries and slice issues they should have him getting good height and distance as well as shooting straight. Otherwise and of the Ping Gs are good

Second a set of Maltbys. I just came across a set of DEM Forged for next of nothing. I hit alongside some Miura CB 301s and Srixon 745. All had different shafts but the difference in feel was hard to tell. Will keep them and have Miuras listed for sale.
