Best Sunday Bag out there...

Recommended Posts

Picking up a sunday bag for a 10 club set I'm making this summer. What are people's thoughts between the following?

1. Titleist Premium Carry bag - like the little "legs" and the pocket set up on this one

2. Ping Moonlite - like the straps

3. Jones Players - clean look, miss the double straps.

Anyone tried some of these and can compare? Any other options out there?

- Other. TaylorMade Quiver might be another option. Short legs. Multiple pockets. Full length divider. Single strap. Sub $90 shipped.

Mizuno BR-D2 ... Single full length divider, short fold out legs, double strap, around 3 pounds, multi pockets, less than $100.

It depends on what your looking for ... For me and my back, full size legs were a must, I just couldn't bend over every time to pick up the bag off the ground. If I could have, I would have gone with the Titleist Premium. The little legs are perfect to keep your clubs out of the dew/moisture but don't get in the way or add weight.

Jones makes the Rover I believe... but it doesn't have legs... A Sunday bag with legs doesn't strike me as a "Sunday" bag, but I understand why you would want them. For a small set though, I think the Jones bags are the best... Players or Original. I use the Utility all the time and it has the legs, but still small enough if you wanted a minimal set... I love this bag.

I know I'm being contrary here but after many attempts over the years to find "the best Sunday bag" I've concluded that it's the most compact, lightest stand bag you can find.

The difference in size and weight between a 7.5" top ultralight stand bag with 6-7 clubs and a sleeve of balls in it and a no-stand "Sunday bag" with 6-7 clubs and a sleeve of balls is very slight (a few percent maybe?). The convenience of not having to find a dry spot to set the bag 30+ times a round and not having to bend over is IMHO much greater than the added few ounces of weight that the legs add.

I sure wish Ping still made the old Mantis bag, except with ultralight nylon material and carbon fiber legs. It would be a category killer. Grabbing the top of the Mantis as I slid the single strap off my shoulder and giving the stand actuator a slight squeeze was the easiest carry-bag experience ever!

I picked up a Nike Sunday bag years ago thinking I'd put it to good use but I really never did.

**The upsides:**

Light w. comfy straps

Full-size legs

Plenty of pockets

**The downsides:**

Not much lighter than most full-size "ultralight" bags

Only 2 slots for clubs

Really hard to stick more than 6 or 7 clubs in there

My conclusion was that it was better to either buy a pushcart or a normal (ultralight) bag. The Sunday bag was really only useful for quick trips to the range back when I foolishly used a staff bag.

I've had a decent amount of bags over the years and really am liking my Jones Players Series. Really cool bag and the full plastic bottom is really nice and underrated in the Sunday Category. Makes it very easy to stand/lean against something. I don't feel the need for double straps though. Their utility rover does have double straps though.

I also like having it not be a club brand so when I switch clubs, I dont' feel weird having a ping bag with zero ping clubs for example.

Utility Rover is a solid choice for a carry bag with a spine. For some reason not on their site right now though. Can't wait for the rains to stop here so I can get back to using mine again. I wish more carry bags adopted the little legs system like the Sun Mountain H2NO Sunday bag. Just enough to keep the clubs and covers off the ground.

I have both a Ping Moonlight and a Sun Mountain 2.5+. I use both. The Ping Moonlight currently has my hickory irons, niblick, putter and a Ping Rapture mini driver - which I use with the hickory irons, and a G25 5-wood.

The Sun Mountain is my everyday bag, and I rarely have more than 10 clubs in play. Sometimes I shift those into the Moonlight. Both are really nice bags.

I use the 2018 ping moonlight, it's great for 10 clubs or less(8-9 is even better), any more and it tangles too much. Straps are really comfy, when you set it down one strap stands up so not hard to pick up. Belly of bag is waterproof so I've had no issue with moisture problems.

However if I bought it again I'd probably pick up the sun mountain 2.5, wt difference for the legs is so insignificant I think I'd rather have them.

I have 2 Ping Moonlite bags that are mainly used for range or to leave some clubs in another car. Had the good forture of coming across a NWT Sun Mountain Mini that came out in 2008 at a local thrift store for $5. Still had the Golftown tags on it... Counted it up today and realized I have 7 golf bags...

What's In The Ping Moonlite:
Ping Rapture '14 13*
Ping Rapture DI 18*
Titleist 690.CB 4/6/8/PW
Vokey TVD 54*
Odyssey Tank V-Line

I have a Callaway Hyperlite 1+ and like it quite a bit. Lots of storage for a Sunday bag and the short little legs are great for keeping the bag and club heads off the ground and making that much easier to pick up since it's not laying all the way on the ground. Would definitely be my choice for a full time dedicated short set.

That being said, I don't have a dedicated minimalist set up and have been swapping clubs between it and my TM Flextech main bag when I just want to play with the short set, and have to say that I am beginning to think a SM 2.5+ (or similar ultra-lite style) would be a better all-around solution for me. Virtually the same weight, so both good for carrying, works fine on a pushcart or when riding, still get the full size legs and full structure, and (for me) no constant swapping back and forth.
