I've been hitting the range during lunch the past couple weeks. Monday and Tuesday I hit my irons better that I have in a while. Today, I shanked 20 out of 25 balls. No idea what I'm doing or how to fix it. Any ideas? I know it's probably impossible to say without a video but maybe the most common issues that would cause this?

Nice buddy! Just try to forget about it. Go do 100 swings in front of a mirror. Drink a beer. Go back tommorow.

The shanks are like a virus. Once you get em they're hard to get rid of.

Sliding your weight too far ahead on the downswing and hands out too far forwards at impact are two of the more common ones I have seen. As others said, there could be 1000 different reasons, but those are two of the most common.

It is all in your head! Just go out, put in some headphones and play a round of golf. You will drive yourself crazy trying to fix it on the range!!!

If I get a couple sneaking in I'll just try to toe hook a few.

Try hitting at 80% speed next time. Sometimes people go to hard.

There are several simple answers. Let's not give the shanks that much mystery or power. There's probably enough quality, simple, easy to follow advice on this site alone to fill a novel.

Forget about it, take a couple days off and go play.

2 ball drill will fix it in no time (atleast on the range).

Next time shank only a fifth of a bucket, then go eat your lunch and go back to work. (real work, not further golf practice)

I got a bad case of the shanks just like you about a month ago and I went home and googled about the 2 ball drill and that same video somebody above posted with Butch Harmon and it fixed them the next day and I haven't shanked one since and been playing the best golf of my life. Its a funny game.

Strangely enough, I typically get the shanks when my ball striking has been really good, also. I also tend to start hitting hooks with my driver right after I have been hitting it really well. Like gringosurfer said, it's a funny game. I hope you can get it worked out and put it behind you.

IMO this is a great explanation of the root cause of chronic shanking.

Any round without a s*&^% is a good round.

H-Rocketed every iron shot on the range prior to playing PGA West Stadium on a golf trip. I was mortified. Ended up playing about 10 strokes better than I would have expected if felt good on the range

I thought in golf all one had to do was keep your head down .. you mean there's more to it?

.... maybe you were trying to kill the ball? Swinging too fast? Not on a good plane? Too far from ball? Poorly fitted clubs? ... list goes on and on

2 ball drill didn't work for me. Haven't had them in awhile and when they appear, I just got to let them run their course.

If you’re still shanking using the 2 ball drill then you aren’t doing the 2 ball drill right.
