Can anyone poke any holes in my logic?

Ok - I think I've come up with a good solution to a problem, but want to pressure-test it to see if anyone can think of anything glaring I'm missing. Not sure if this was best suited for Club Techs or General Golf, but I thought club builders and fitters might have the best viewpoints.

Quick backstory: I know I want to move from my Mizzy MP-52s to the new JPX 919 Tours, and I've hit that head with both the Project X LZ 5.5 (an OEM option) and the KBS Tour V 110 stiff (a "custom" shaft swap). However, I hit the Tour Vs in a fitting session (indoor on Trackman) and the PX LZ a few weeks later during a Mizuno demo day (outdoor, still off mats, also on TM). Both shafts produced good results in terms of ball speed, launch angle, trajectory, spin & dispersion, but these sessions were about a month apart, and I felt like my swing was doing slightly different things each day. For anyone wondering why I didn't hit the LZ during the fitting session, the fitter didn't suggest it as an option and I didn't know enough about the OEM options to ask.

So...I now want to hit the same head and compare each shaft back-to-back on a LM as well as on the course so I can land on the best shaft option. BTW, I don't buy clubs frequently, so this is a big long-term decision for me.

I've decided the best way to do this is to order the clubs with the OEM PX LZ 5.5 shafts. For the compare, I've also bought a barely-used single 6-iron for $110 for which I'm about to order a KBS Tour V shaft. As long as the standard loft/lie/length specs stay true, that'll give me two 6-irons - one with each shaft - that I can test on the same day(s) with the same swing to do a true comparison.

Once I land on a shaft, I can either game the already-installed PX LZs, or swap for the set of new KBS-Vs I already bought for $180 and sell the LZ pulls as practically new. Whether I sell the new KBS-Vs I have in a box or sell the LZ pulls, I figure I'll probably come close to breaking even for all the "extras" I've bought. I also think I can probably sell the single 6-iron for just about what I paid for it, especially if I include both the KBS shaft and the original DG S300 it came with.

Aside from criticism about how anal I'm being about this, are there any glaring holes that anyone can spot in this plan? No one has a crystal ball, and a large part of my plan involves recouping much of the extra testing expense through resale (which can be unpredictable), but what am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I know it's a bit of work, but I'm willing to trade time and effort (and a little money) for thoroughness and the knowledge that I tried each one **on the course**. As much as I value some of the data from launch monitors, I still don't like hitting off mats in controlled conditions. I want to see what the ball does in the real world when I hit off grass and tees. And I want to see the actual trajectory when I hit a draw, fade, knock-down, etc.

Not an approach for everyone, but it'll help me.

If you really want this to be accurate, make sure you put both 6i on a loft/lie machine to confirm they are what they should be. Don't assume they are on spec.

If the extra effort for the on course testing is worth it to you then that sounds like a fine plan to me. ?

Your logic is great. Good plan on shaft buy and sell too. I’ve done that stuff plenty of times. Typically mine is on the bay or something but buy something with intent of selling the shaft or shafts. You might be surprised...selling shafts is pretty predictable. I’ve sold 8 sets in a month. All but one I never used. It is a big investment and your peace of mind is all that really matters. Hit both shafts and see. Good comment above though...check the specs on both to see that they match.

Maybe your fitter can come to the course with you. Part of the feel of the shaft will come from the ground interaction. Take your time, be sure. Then continue to work on your game.

Agree, it cant be done much better than this, but most want go that long way the OP does, but he cant fail this way, he will make it, and when he accept the extra job and money laid out, its a no brainer, so just move on with those plans.

The only tip i have is to bring a roll of lead tape, and try off a few grams extra head weight, that might change how this shafts works and play in your hands, and the club as a whole might improve in performance from that, but never mind SW values, go by feel and how it works, THEN measure that value, and build them based on that.

Appreciate the input, guys. This project is definitely a window into my tendency for gathering AS MUCH info as possible, but getting deep in the weeds doesn't bother me and is actually part of the fun. For anyone who's interested, I'll update this thread with my results in a few weeks once I complete the exercise. Otherwise, thanks!
