Crazy Rounds & Tournaments

In 1977 Al Geiberger followed up an opening 72 with the first 59 on the PGA Tour, then fired 72-70 to win by 2 shots.

Last year, Drew Nesbitt went 79-59-73-70 to finish t49 on the Latino America Tour. The 59 started with back to back eagles on 10 & 11, a bogey on 12 followed by pars until a third eagle on 18 for 31. On the front, he went birdie-**1**-birdie, 3 pars, then 3 more birdies. Lifetime, he has made 1 of 2 cuts on the PGA Tour, 0 for 4 on the Canadian Tour and 6 of 9 on the Latino America Tour with less than 20 K earnings for these 15 events...must be frustrating to know you have the talent to shoot 59 and make a cut on the PGA Tour, but be unable to put 4 rounds together.

I don’t think a round like 59 is an indicator of talent. It’s more like a perfect storm.

A guy who’s scoring average is lower than everyone else’s is better indicator of talent.

Imagine shooting a 59 and barely squeaking in the top 50.

Rhein Gibson in 2016 shot 2 rounds of 62 during a Web.com event (62-66-67-62) -23. He finished 7 shots behind the tournament winner Stephan Jaeger (58-65-64-63) -30. A few players that finished directly behind Jaeger have made a name for themselves on the PGA Tour since then. Jaeger has not.

Some "59" are better than others...take a look at this link and scroll all the way to the bottom.

If I am reading it "correctly", he shot "59" for "round 1", then withdrew after parring the first 3 holes of round 2. Seems more like fat fingers than a legit 59 as his "59" was for 13 holes...heck, I've done that a lot.

I don’t even know how to respond to this. Yes, you’re right, a fake 59 isn’t the same as a real 59.

Obviously, 4 eagles (one being a hole in one) is a one off, BUT there is a difference between going really low once while playing with your buddies and doing it in a pro tournament.

Pretty rough...good news is that Nesbitt shot 29 on the front side of round 4 this week and birdied 2 of his last 4 for a come from behind win in the 60th Abierto Mexicano de Golf. https://www.pgatour.com/la/en/tournaments/60-abierto-mexicano-de-golf/leaderboard.html

I’m just saying that a one time 59 is just not a real indicator by itself. Now if you’re a Jim Furyk with several ( 58-59) .. it becomes a factor ... I get that it gives a glimpse of potential. But the guy who shoots 64 7/8 times a season most likely is the better player. That’s what I meant.

its funny how some guys can take it deep and some are steady plodders and at the end of the day (or 4) how it all shakes out

no doubt there is getting hot but to keep it going when you know your low is tough and certainly shows potential.
