Stroke Lab shaft actually helping anyone?

I see this shaft getting a lot of use on Tour and seems pretty popular here.

Would love to hear from anyone on if the shaft has actually made a noticeable improvement in your putting? I haven't noticed anyone on Tour markedly improve in putting, but who knows exactly. Molinari seems to have jumped ~40 spots in Strokes Gained from last year to this year, but I'm not sure when exactly he put the Stroke Lab shaft in play.

I have the V-Line and really like it. Whether it’s better than the other putters I’ve recently bought I can’t say yet, but it’s fair to say it’s very reliable. Not had a single round with it where I’ve felt uncomfortable whereas my Bettinardi Studio Stock #2 I have had good and bad. That may well be because I find mallets easier to line up.

My lag putting is so much better but I'm worse from inside 10 feet. I don't know if it's mental or what but I tend to get quick with the short putts. The nice thing is my lag putting has been so good that I haven't had many 2nd putts! Oh and the stock grips are terrible...

Are the pros really using it.... or are they just painted shafts for branding?

That we'll probably never know. I'd guess it's not just a painted shaft though because guys like Sergio went to the stroke lab and are now back to regular steel. If it was painted, we wouldn't see Sergio back in regular steel.

Just a little soft for me. I don't know what I'm going to replace it with!

I believe there's a weight in the butt of the grip too

The weight is in the shaft - at the butt end of the grip. The grips themselves weigh 65g and 75g depending on size. There are numerous threads showing the plug from the shaft pulled and the grips weighed on a digital scale.

Correct. The smaller pistol grip is 75g with a 30g weight in the shaft. The larger grip is 65g with a 40g weight in the shaft.

I got a stroke lab 7 face balanced 35" putter with standard grip for my birthday earlier this May. It's my first new putter since I got my Ping Craz-E G2i (2009?) I've played 4 rounds using it and even though this putter is much longer than my older putter and the grip isn't fat like my superstoke slim 3.0, it's definitely been a huge improvement for me. I've made more birdies and longer putts (and less 3 putts) over these 4 rounds than previously. Maybe it's just confidence or as they say, 'The club hasn't got to know me yet'...Golf buddies notice the ball rolls much better vs my old Ping. Don't know if the face insert technology (micro hinge) or shaft weighting is responsible for that.

But I do want to cut down the shaft and replace the grip. Came here looking for advise on how to do this while not messing up the the shaft weighting. Any comments? I'm sure it just comes down to math.

My buddies are like, don't change it since I'm putting so well with it. Part of me agrees.

  • 4 weeks later...

I picked up the Stroke Lab ONE exactly 8 days ago. I wasn't even aware of the shaft tech when trying it out at the store, I was just looking to spend 350.00 max and Odyssey lefties were in great supply on the rack. Really liked the sticky thinner grip over the smooth thick ones on my previous two putters, and I proceeded to sink 2 in a row from 20 feet of astroturf...heck yeah, that's a sale! Ring me up!

Wouldn't you know it the darn thing feels really good playing real golf. Two rounds under the belt and putting was above average, consequently instilling me with a growing confidence. I'm definitely in love.

Now that I've commented on this thread there's a good chance I go stone cold and putt like a jack-*ss.

In all seriousness I think the Odyssey folks have a winner with this shaft design, counter balance thingy

Between the equipment or seeing an optometrist. I'd take the later.

Coaching from a professional for determining the line of putt is more important than anything else. If you "see" the right line of putt then you could adjust your putting , but if you're starting on the wrong line, then no equipment could save the day.

Golf equipment industry is getting more and more like the fashion industry. I wonder what's "trendy" for the next season. Long sleeves or short, purple or green.....maybe it'll be the hybrid.

I have the same sentiments as @Pi5seeker. As a one trying to really put a dent into my handicap ranking this year, having the inability to get my distance control down (because I have to take such a pokey stroke for shorter putts) is a big problem for me. I lost a lot of confidence with short putts over the few rounds I played with a 7s.

I went back to all steel.

I’ve got a Toulon Stroke Lab on the way, I had a V-Line but sold it this week as I prefer a milled face to the insert. The Toulon I will compare to my other milled putters. I am regripping it with a Winn Dri-Tac Jumbo Lite too which isn’t much different from the Stock Oversize in weight, c.10g, so I may just add a bit of lead tape.

That’s 7g lighter than the Oversize grip so it’ll make little difference.
