What do you look for in a driver?

I'm currently an 8 handicap, working on my game and rebuilding my bag... My current swing speed is around 112-115. I am not getting as much distance out of the driver as I want, mainly due to my swing.

I am also planning on upgrading my driver this season, and have started testing out replacement clubs. Honestly, the golf shops demo bag isn't doing it for me... Once I get my swing into reasonable shape, and my pocket book back to life, I am going to go get custom fit. I will either do it here in Louisville at Golf Headquarters (Come on, Greggers!) or visit family in Dallas and go to a former Long Drive pro.

My goal will be minimizing my mistakes, which hopefully also maximizes my overall (average) driving distance. At this point, I have no idea what I am going to end up in... I've tried a ton of different stuff and have had issues with most of them, but I think it's more shaft related than head related. We will see.

I wish it were that easy... I'm actually at an odd place on my home course where I either need to consistently add another 10+ yards to start taking short cuts or drop 30 yards and add a significant amount of consistency. None of the par 5s are particularly friendly for long approaches, so my overall score would probably improve if I stopped chasing eagles.

After that, there are only 3 really LONG par 4s... I could easily hit 3 wood on every hole but those and have a fair shot at a good round... I've decided to go more aggressive and try to get into wedge range and while also building consistency in my wedge game.

I do think a new driver will be a large part of the puzzle for me improving overall, and I'm hoping upgrading at 3 wood will also add a consistent option for when I'm not hitting PM bombs.... We shall see.
