I've been a volunteer asst with our local HS golf team for the past two years. Pretty good, winning season last year, but no one advanced from sectionals. Graduated 4 seniors last year.

This year, we had a freshman, two sophomores, and graduated 3 seniors. We might not have a full team next year (5).

I'm going to admit that I was considering not coming back next year but these kids, and all the aggravation they bring, grow on you and the thought of them not having a team next year is bothersome.

Back to Sectionals... our senior, #1 player, missed advancing to regionals this year by 4 strokes. Four. Quatro. We just couldn't get him comfortable over the putter. Ever. Great kid. The team that won our conference meet missed advancing by 4 strokes as well. I'm certain they lost sleep that night.

The head coach and I are sitting by the 18th green watching our groups come in (threesomes). One of the opposing schools player is on in regulation and has a 15 footer for birdie. Hits a great putt but it's outside by maybe a foot. He non-chalantly taps in but it spins out. I gasp. He does this again. And again, for a 7. Btw, this meltdown did not cost the team a position in the standings.

He's visibly upset and walks off towards his coach and says something like "and that's how I'm finishing the last hole I'll ever play of high school golf".

1) Regardless of how bad you might be playing on a given day, you still need to scramble to finish in as few strokes as possible FOR YOUR TEAM.

2) EVERY. STROKE. MATTERS.
