Really worried about them changing the tungsten weight in the new P790.

They used to have the weight in the toe, but now they have a slim weight in the bottom of the club to provide higher launch.

In my ears that sound like less penetrating flight and more balloons in the air. The original P790 already had enough launch (and more than it needed).

One of the videos stated they had "inverted cone technology" whatever that is. But they're saying each club has different speed foam placement or something, so perhaps they tune the launch that way.

Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) is TaylorMade's face construction technology that they added to metal woods in the early 2000s. It allows for them to preserve ball speed as you get farther from the face, thus enlarging the sweet spot. Basically, they're controlling the amount of thickness on the backside of the face to manipulate ball speed across the face. It's been on many irons in the past and you can see it on the backside of the r7 line. it looks like a little donut.

On the new P790, they modified ICT to match the new iron. This donut was made a little shallower to distribute more evenly and then they shifted it to the toe side a little because of how the irons are made. The net result is a club that should perform more similar across the face, whether they're toe or heel side mis-hits.

I think mizuno did something similar in the HMB

Maybe they did, not sure. I was just pointing out that TM has used ICT for years and it's been tweaked this year for the new P790.

I want to see a comparison of the new P790s to the T-200, since one of these will be my new irons, come September.

I like the current 790’s because they were so forgiving, does this change anything with this new design and weight distribution?

Have you seen the TXG video of the launch today?

When they measure the new P790 2-iron UDI they say it’s 20* degrees loft exactly?!? I mean they say it’s supposed to be 17* but they measure the club they got and it actually shows 20!

Haven’t seen this anywhere but did they fix the dead feel 8-pw?

  • calogecaloge Members Posts: 452 ✭✭✭✭

TaylorMade seems to have nailed this release. New epic irons seemed to offer little to justify the price tag beyond the brag appeal, but TM actually doing something super different and the tech story has me actually intrigued. Might be the first time I feel the premium iron price is justified since they started filling our irons with screws.

So am I crazy or what? We now have PW that is 43.5*? I am assuming that this is much about distance, but what is to be done at the bottom end of the bag? The soon to be released TM 790 Ti’s are going to carry the ball 150 yards or some silliness? Also concerned about peak height. Someone enlighten me here. I get some are looking for distance, but wow, just go elsewhere?

The AW is at 49. Not sure what the issue is or why people get so worked up about lofts and numbers on clubs.

That graph is off. There is no 3 iron in the P790 Ti set.

Wold the P790TI fit into the GI iron category considering its size, offset and lofts?

Wow...the reviewer is swinging his 7i at 101 mph and getting 205 yards . That's what happens with a hot face and super fast swing I guess.

    Nope, always positive reviews.

I'm definitely in the minority here regarding the strong lofts. I'm actually glad they are designing clubs like this because I'm a digger and a fairly low ball hitter. So, I can weaken the lofts 1.5-2 degrees and I get more bounce, higher launch, and a bit less offset as well. I did this with my AP3 set and the numbers and ball flight were great. If I didn't absolutely hate the feel, they would probably still be in the bag today. I'm seriously thinking about giving the new 790 a shot. Will probably check out the T200 as well. Supposedly the feel is improved on those vs AP3.

Articles about the Ti say $2800 for 4-AW, so I would assume the 790 is the same. I asked this question on the TaylorMade website chat, but the person didn’t know.

When you are as good as these guys you can hit anything and still make it work. I feel they definitely always say what they do and dont like. AL has said several times (even with the new titlesit T irons) that they are not for him but as his job is to hit them and report what happens when he does that is all they do. He could hit any iron with any loft 250m but that doesn't mean I'm going to think I can. There is so much more to a club then the number and loft.

    Hitting it straight is overrated!
