Fox Coverage - US Open 2019

“These guys.” Nice relatable, relevant commentary there, guys.

Saw past the first five names on the leaderboard NEVER.

Regular simulcast was just like watching a feature group, morning and afternoon. Saw two of Oosthuizen’s 66 shots.

“Best anti-left swing in the game. Except this is going left.”

“The 11th hole is one of the best holes on the course.” It’s literally my least favorite hole in the course. Hole 1 is at the bottom of the list, but it’s hole 1, so it gets a bump over 11.

“It’s the shortest putt anyone has ever missed in their career.” “I’m looking at the thing here and it was a foot. It was one foot 6 inches. It was 18 inches.”

“When you root for a shot you hit poorly it makes you loo...eh...feel better about yourself when you root it correctly.”

Phil Michelson at 6. “He almost holed it on the fly.” Ball hit at least five feet away. Again, by the no name host: “Nearly jarred it for his 1.”

Phil putting. “His lines were aimed at the center of the green.”

“Michelson winning would be a bigger story than Tiger’s comeback.”

“There’s no way he’ll be able to get this within 15 or 20 shots.” Talking about Jason Day chipping on the 17th green.

“He hit every putt to the right today. Sorry, to his left.” Talking about Mickelson’s putting.

“Perfectly positioned for Brooks Koepka.” On 1 .... the ball ended up in a divot.

“He likes it!” - Bad Faxon. What is he talking about??? He kept saying this, even when players were disgusted with their terrible shots.

“Pedestrian crosses”....on hole 4, in the middle of the fairway??

“That’s probably one of the greatest double crosses He’s ever hit in his life.” Talking Tiger on 5.

Most of these were said by Zinger, Faxon, Strange. Can’t even tell them apart. They all say stupid things.

That’s enough for now. I have two hours left on this recording. I haven’t touched Buck yet.

Zinger is the worst.

US golf commentary just sucks. Period. It’s just non-stop incessant babble. Joe Buck just needs to talk and talk and call it like a football game, which it isn’t. We need Peter Aliss and Jay Townsend on every broadcast.

It wasn't on Fox but the featured groups morning coverage.

One of the moron commentators said the following when Leishman was putting for eagle on the 6th, was already

1 under par.

"Leishman just birdied the 5th now has this eagle attempt he really needs to hole to this to right the ship".

Geez he wasn't 5 over par

I usually hate Fox's golf coverage, but I didn't notice anything bad today. Maybe my expectations are too low.

I just want them to sync up the sound and video on shots.

Mute with music on. So I really don't know.

I didn't find the commentary particularly annoying. What I really appreciated about the FOX coverage was there was a lot of it. We probably got to see 90% of the morning wave, and 90% of the afternoon wave. One thing I wish they wouldn't do, and FOX is not alone on this, is when they suddenly decide to show a shot by a golfer they apparently had forgotten existed, I wish they would not say "earlier", or "while we were away", because you know right away they wouldn't be showing this guy if this wasn't going to be a jar job from the fairway. They could just show the shot, and then say "that was a few moments ago"....keep a little surprise going, guys. But generally, I am OK with the coverage. BTW, doesn't Azinger work for NBC?

Azinger certainly tends to ramble on and on about nothing. The sad thing is, the FOX coverage is far better than it was when they started at Chambers Bay, which shows just how awful they were at the start.

I watched it to watch it. The course and location is a thing of beauty, and I thought the camera work was fine. Every comment by the announcers can't be pristine, but I'm watching golf, not critiquing anyone. It's the U.S. Open, relax and enjoy...

The crack WRX investigative squad already determined this to be artificial audio inserted in the broadcast. You must have missed those earlier threads a couple of years ago. Get with it man!

I believe Joe said something about Aphibarnrat being a popular figure on tour when Zinger chimes in with "because of his figure".

It's not been terrible. Not great, but not terrible. They could still take some cues from the European Tour coverage. Less is more.

The technology and angles Fox uses brought some new perspectives to the broadcast. Liked that a lot. The commentary just shows the inexperience of Fox in terms of broadcasting golf and the announcers rarely working as a team.

It was pretty bad, IMO as I watched last night. Mark Brooks? Guy had nothing to say, but kept on. I was watching the featured groups. I tried watching the regular coverage, thinking because Stenson was on a birdie tear they'd show something - yep, a putt on 8 and his putt on 9, then that was it. Regular coverage was still basically featured group plus an occasional other shot - even the commercials were running at the same times and the same ads.

Oh well, I'm not usually into the commentator complaining and won't get to watch much this weekend, but there just wasn't much last night that made me think I was missing much.

Back to worrying about Koepka's hats and YJS talking smack to his caddie - making Mark Brooks look kind of smart, lol.

Watching last night with the main feed on Fox and feature groups on FS1, my viewing experience was greatly enhanced by their syncing of the commercial breaks so you couldn't flip back and forth to keep the golf on the screen.

Coverage was great yesterday. If you want to sift through hours and hours of non-stop coverage and find a couple quotes that sound bad out of context, go ahead and enjoy your US Open weekend. :eyeroll:

When I was watching it was shots shots shots shots. Totally fine with Joe Buck and Zinger. I liked late in the day when Joe Buck invited Jim Nantz to stop by the booth this weekend (he basically goes, "someone told me to text him. Hey, I'm on TV. I'll just say it : come on by Jim. You live on the course. Come by any time and we'll let you in the booth."). Joe is one of those guys who got an early rap as one thing, and he's basically the opposite. He's not smug (even though he looks it). He's funny and self-deprecating. And he actually is one of the best in the biz at shutting up during a big moment. Actually hearing him these days after his initial year doing golf is a testament to what a pro he is. He's much better and more natural at talking about golf.

The new "two-speed" putt line is good (it's not just the static "banana" line. They actually show the two speeds and how much break the ball with take.) They have tons of shot tracker.

We'll see how they do when the story lines start spinning on Sunday, but FOX coverage is good so far. It's a different stratosphere than CBS.

OMG I wanted Zinger to just shut up for 10 seconds. Somebody needs to tell him that he doesn't need to be talking every damn second.

I thought yesterday's US Open coverage was up to par, and looking forward to watching today's round. Saw holes and vantage points I hadn't seen in the past and decent announcer comments. I am well aware no matter what the topic, can't make everybody happy. Nevertheless, I am amazed at how many complainers exist on this board. It's boring. You have to wonder if they can even play decent golf or are they just foot wedge negative watchers and complainers.

I have had no problem with the coverage by Fox but all US networks that cover golf feel that it is a requirement to talk constantly as if it were radio coverage.

I'm digging the USGA app coverage. I don't remember another tournament where the camera shots/angles were so good. They must be using drones?

So is this now the official US Open thread?

I said it in another thread, but I've been impressed with the continued improvement in the Fox coverage over the years. IMO they've gone from the worst camera work/shot-tracking to probably the best out there and their use of technology at the right moments helps provide some perspective without going overboard like previous efforts. I've had it on mute most of the day so haven't really been listening to the commentary, but I think their strongest commentator is poorly utilized - I'd like to see Faxon replace Azinger in the main seat as I think his insight is better without the constant drone that Azinger brings.

Actually like the camera wrk and angles, no fan of Joe Buck though.
